Set up a Nokia e62 bluetooth modem on Cingular GPRS Phones
Here's how to set up your Mac to use a Nokia e62 as a Bluetooth modem with Cingular. I'll bet this works on lots of other Bluetooth phones as well. Although there's an existing hint covering a similar topic, some of the newer phones use slightly (but critically) different configurations. This blog entry ended up being the most useful for me.

Here's what I did...
  1. Grab a modem script that works. I used the script from the above-linked blog entry. Unzip it and put it in /Library/Modem Scripts.
  2. Set up the connection between the phone and Mac with the Bluetooth System Preferences Panel. In the "Bluetooth Mobile Phone Set Up" wizard, check "Access the Internet with your phone's data connection," and select the GPRS radio option.
  3. Set up the modem connection in the Network System Preference Panel. Select Bluetooth from the Show drop-down menu. Enter these options in the PPP tab (case sensitive!):
    • Service Provider: Cingular
    • Account Name: ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
    • Password: CINGULAR1
    • Telephone Number: *99#
Enter these options in the Bluetooth Modem tab:
    • Modem: [name of the modem script from step one]
    • Check all four boxes
To connect, select Connect from the Modem Status menu item (or connect from /Applications -> Internet Connect). Depending on how your phone is configured, you might need to click the "Answer" button on your phone to accept the Mac's connection. Here's where this hint differs from others that I found here and in other locations. Some GPRS phones use the telephone number ISP.CINGULAR. But apparently the newer phones just need the *99#. So this page, while extensive, isn't totally reliable -- depending on your phone.

However, I read good things about taniwha.org.uk's modem scripts. If you find the nokme script a little slow, try these. If you don't connect, try the other telephone number. Also, try switching the PPP Options "Send PPP echo packets" and "Use TCP header compression" on or off.

OK, I've set everything up and I seem to be connected, but I'm not able to get to any site on the web. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

Well, do you have any other internet services? Can you ping? Does your computer have a proper IP address (i.e., one that does not begin with "169")?

Maybe you need to change your browser's connection method (though I didn't). In Firefox, this is in Preferences...Advanced...Settings -- try "auto-detect".

Also, try to change the various PPP settings in the System Preferences Network panel

I dumped the phone, so I can't try this out for you.

Your instruction would have worked but for "Check all four boxes"

"Enter these options in the Bluetooth Modem tab:
Modem: [name of the modem script from step one]
Check all four boxes"

Cingular customer service, however, gave me the solution.
Uncheck on the Bluetooth Modem tab:
- Enable error correction and compression in modem, and
- Wait for dial tone before dialing

This change worked for me. Thanks for the other tips.

No luck here at all. I get an error that it can't connect to the PPP server after it tries "Authenticating..."
