Sync parts of iTunes libraries from many Macs to an iPod iPod
This isn't really a hint so much as it is an undocumented but terribly useful feature for my lifestyle.

I have an iMac at home with a 250GB hard drive that stores my iTunes library and syncs the music to my 60GB iPod. But I spend most of my time using my MacBook Pro on the road, and tend to download lots of podcasts. I would like to keep my iPod's podcasts up to date from the MBP, but not store all my music on its smallish hard drive.

It turns out that with the latest version of iTunes, I can sync parts of my MBP library to my iPod (i.e., just the podcasts) without overwriting the music on the iPod from the iMac's library. So now I sync my podcasts and contacts from my MBP's library, and music, movies and TV shows from my iMac's library just by selecting the sync checkboxes on the relevant tabs in iTunes under DEVICES.

[robg adds: My friend and occasional hints editor Kirk notes that you'll want to hold down Command and Option when you first connect the iPod to mount it in manual mode. Change the settings and then set it back to automatic sync.]

I think this was already possible with iTunes 6. I synched my Photos using my Windows machine and all the rest using my PowerBook. I don't know if this also applies to Music files.

It sounds like a great hint, but how do I tell each computer NOT to erase the content of the ipod. I tried to connect my ipod to a different computer, and iTunes still says that the ipod can only be synced with one iTunes library at a time.

Just a quick note that Kirk's URL is incorrect in the link. The link in the story is to www.mcelheran.com, but Kirk's site is actually at www.mcelhearn.com. ;)

I googled and searched apple for about an HOUR the other day looking for this very key combo. THANK YOU RobG! (Maybe you could post it as it's own hint?)

Yeah, this no longer works in iTunes 7. You really should check these, Rob.

You're missing a key part of the hint. He's not synching different music libraries from each computer to his iPod, he's synching different types of media from each comp to it. In other words, one computer can synch photos and music, another can synch podcasts and movies/videos, etc. You still can't synch different music libraries to the same iPod from different machines without overwriting whatever music is already there, at least not in any easy way I'm aware of.
