When you install Aperture for the first time, you are given the opportunity to include examples; 800 MB of Tibet images in my case. These images are put into your Aperture library for you.
However, the images are not only in the library where you can see them, they are also installed in the Application Support folder on the boot drive as an Aperture project file. To find them, open your boot drive and type approject into the search box. Locate any that are in the Application Support folder and delete them -- assuming you don't need the project file.
