Work around non-updating Smart Playlists in iTunes 7 Apps
After upgrading to iTunes 7, I noticed the Smart Playlists I had, which were random selections limited by song count, size, etc., were not refreshing upon being played. The impact of this is that the playlists I use to feed a nano would never pick up any different songs beyond the songs fed the first time into the nano.

Well, this is clearly a bug that will have to wait until Apple sees fit to update, but in the meantime, Option-click on the smart playlist and slightly modify the selection criteria and save it. This will update the selection. I usually make a small change to the limit value (ie; 1600 -> 1599) just to keep from having to revert the change right after.

[robg adds: Macosxhints' guest editor Kirk McElhearn and I were looking at this, and it definitely seems to be a bug. Weird things happen, too, if you're playing the last song in the smart playlist -- the progress bar will reach the end, but the song will never be marked 'done.' You will not see this glitch if your smart playlist includes rules based on updated data, such as play count, last play date, etc. Kirk points out that you can also refresh the playlist by simply highlighting all the songs on it and pressing Delete. iTunes will then re-stock the list with new music, assuming you have the Live Updating box checked. This seems like an easier solution than modifying the playlist's rules.]

robg, could you explain the very last point, please? I tried the delete key on several of my smart playlists (both live updated and not), but it doesn't work... There doesn't seem to be an according menu action either. So what am I missing?

(I also changed my UI to English, as my default language is German, and interfaces sometimes happen to be broken, to no avail)

Make sure you select all the items in the playlist first (Command-A), then hit the Delete key on the keyboard -- on the US keyboard, it's two keys above the Return key, just below F12 and F13.

maybe i'm too stupid. assuming this works for any smart playlist which has a limit (with random selection) and 'live updating' set, and which, without said limit, would contain more songs, it seems it doesn't work for me. my 'delete' key works normally and since i have an american keyboard + layout there shouldn't be a problem with the mapping.

i know this feature works for party shuffle, though...

the real hint inside this hint (the delete function in smart playlists) worked as advertised for me. also i see a "delete" command in itunes' "edit" menu and in the context menu. tried them both and they work.

I've been using this trick for a few months now. Too bad it only works for local smart playlists and not on the same smart playlists when shared. I like to listen to music on my laptop in my room when I go to sleep and I keep all my music on my desktop downstairs. I have a 45 minute smart playlist to put me to sleep, but if I want new music, I have to go to the downstairs computer, highlight all and delete.

couldn't you (locally) make a smart playlist out of the shared (remote) music?
