Refresh older existing iTunes 7 album art Apps
Yet Another iTunes 7 artwork hint ... most of my music is ripped from CD, and I've got my artwork from places like Amazon or even scanned myself. I hoped that iTunes 7's artwork download facility would replace all my lower-quality artwork automatically, but it did not.

However, if you select all the songs on an album, do a Get Info, then check the box next to the Artwork image well (don't put an image there, though!), it clears the artwork for the whole album. You can then use the standard Get Artwork facility to update it.

By right/control-clicking on any selected group of songs, you can select "Clear Downloaded Artwork". Then right/control-click again to "Get Album Artwork". No need to go to the Get Info window.

Yeah, except that, in my own case at least, the contextual menu doesn't seem to do anything to clear out older artwork. I've never been able to get it to do what it's supposed to.

For that reason, I'm grateful for this hint. You've just saved me a ton of time. I had started to clear out artwork track by track and gave up after getting through a few albums, because of how tedious it became.

Or not

That option only appears for tracks that already have art from the iTunes Music Store (hence the name 'Clear Downloaded Artwork'), which kind of defeats the purpose. Incidentally, the 'Get Album Artwork' contextual menu option is available for tracks which already have artwork, although it doesn't appear to do anything.

Nope, doesn't work. Only clears downloaded artwork from iTunes Store, not artwork they may be embedded.

If you're feeling lazy (and who isn't!), and you find that the contextual menu "Clear Downloaded Artwork" isn't working (as I found), you can get this script (Remove Artwork), from Doug's Applescripts for iTunes which will remove all the artwork from the selected songs.

As far as simply deleting artwork, you can just do a Multi Item Edit and check the artwork box. It will blank out all artwork of the selected tracks. (But thanks for mentioning the script!)

Just to clarify:

Clear Downloaded Artwork deletes the *downloaded* artwork from the iTunes Store.

The method described in the hint deletes the artwork you added manually of with a 3rd party program.

The artwork you put in yourself has precedence over the downloaded artwork.

Note that the album artwork downloaded from iTunes isn't actually stored in the individual music files. While this is fine if you only use iTunes to play your music, other programs (such as XBMC or WinAmp) won't make use of the new artwork and you'll have removed the artwork those programs could use.
