See album art for music in a shared iTunes library Apps
I keep my iTunes library on a server in my den and often play it via the library sharing feature to my laptop (which then streams it off again to my AirPort Express, but that's irrelevant to this hint).

It's always annoyed me that, unlike when playing music locally, the remotely shared music's album art is not accessible in the lower-left corner window. I still haven't figured out how to do that (does someone else know?), but after installing iTunes 7 (I have no idea whether this works with iTunes 6), I was playing my remote library on shuffle. Eventually, one of my video podcasts came up in the shuffle. Since I set the preference to show videos in a separate window, iTunes dutifully popped up the playback window, but the interesting part was that when I skipped to the next track, the window didn't go away. Instead, the next song's album art appeared and continued to update with each song.

I've not seen any way to invoke this album art window other than playing a video, as well as having the separate window option for videos enabled. Clearly, though, it is not impossible to retrieve album art from a shared library. It now just needs to be more convenient. For those interested, I blogged about this with a bit more detail and a screen shot.

If you click on the top bar of the little album art window in the corner, and change it from "Selected Item" to "Now Playing", you'll be able to see artwork from the shared libraries as it plays. This has been working in iTunes for a few versions already, although it's a bit hard to expose this functionality.

Unfortunately, you can't actually see the artwork as you browse the shared libraries, because the cover art is sent to iTunes embedded in the song file (usually at the start) for iTunes to take out and display.

For a very very long time, shared libraries didn't even have proper applescript access, so things like Growl notifications for songs playing wouldn't work. I think it was a couple of versions ago that it did start working.

I'm still waiting for someone smart at Apple to figure out how to get all the artwork from a shared library to a client iTunes in a smart and efficient way.

As you might tell, I've been a little obsessed with Cover art and shared libraries.

I can't get iTunes 7 to display shared cover art in the bottom right corner. I tried clicking on the title bar and changed it to "Now Playing" but the box is empty saying "album artwork not modifiable".

Any idea?

I'm pretty bummed I can't use Coverflow on a shared library as I keep all of my music connected to a Mini on the other end of my house. I'm equally bummed I can't use Coverflow with my iPod since that is what I use at my work for my music library.

While I'm at it, I wish I could use shared libraries or my iPod with Party Shuffle!

Looks like the first comment is correct, but you dont even need to click on that preview window, just start playing the song and it the album art for it appears.

For finding album art that iTunes doesn't find, there's nothing better than http://www.widget-foundry.com/widgets/amazonart.htm

Probably my most used widget.

I have a Mac Mini hooked to my TV and first noticed this problem as Front Row wasn't showing some of the album art when streaming from my shared library on my iMac.

Digging a bit deeper, I found that Front Row (or iTunes, for that matter), will display art for shared songs in the following situations:
1. Track was purchased from iTMS
2. Art was added manually

It would NOT display the album art for tracks in my library for which the new iTunes 7 found and downloaded "missing" art.

In ~/Music/iTunes/Album Artwork, there are two folders -- Download and Local. I'm guessing the difference between the two is what causes the sharing not to work, but not sure how to convert them all to local (files in both folders look similar, but I'm not versed in the format that's being used).

One interesting sidenote is that I did a Get Info on one of the aforementioned tracks with downloaded art. By copying the album art image, and then pasting into another track of the same album (overwriting what was there), the mini was finally able to see that shared art.

I'd rather not take that step for all my tracks that iTunes 7 filled in artwork. Any ideas?
