Send SMS to Cingular users via Terminal UNIX
This is my first hint, and it is really a trivial idea I had. I thought it would be neat to send a text message from Terminal using curl. So here it goes:
curl -d "from=$1&min=$2&msg=$3" \
http://www.cingularme.com/do/public/send
This is all on one line, of course (but with the backslash, copy and paste should work). Name the file curlsms, change the permission to allow execution (chmod a+x curlsms), and place it in a folder of your liking. To run it, navigate to its directory and the usage is:
./curlsms sender 1234567890 Message text
Replace sender with your name, 1234567890 with the recipient's phone number, and Message text with the message you'd like to send. I'm sure some of you super-creative users could integrate this into AppleScripts and do some really neat Mail rules and all that business with such a script.

Keep in mind there is a character limit on many of the text fields of Cingular's web form. This script does not make the necessary checks, and those additions would be pretty nice. Also, you can check out the form and add scheduling features and priority features as well. I am a bash shell idiot, and it would take me years to make this robust.

[robg adds: This worked; the only change I made was to add > /dev/null to the end, after the URL. I did this to route the output of the curl command into never-never land -- otherwise you'll see the URL's source code go scrolling past. With the change, you'll only see a summary of the transmission time at the end.]

I needed to put my message text in quotes. It was only sending my first word without them. Otherwise, a perfect and very useful hint!

Of course, you can do this with *any* North American network in iChat.

Create a "New Chat with Person" (Cmd-shft-n)

Enter in "+11231234567"

That's the plus sign, 1, the area code, and the 7 digit phone number (without quotes)

Then type your message.

And they can even reply to your message.

Can you give a little more detail as to how I'm supposed to set this up? I'm not a big IM'er (I usually stick with good ol' IRC) so I haven't used iChat much. I did set it up to work with Gmail Chat but I hardly ever use it. I've been using BluePhoneElite to pair my phone with the computer, then sending and recieving texts through the phone (but to and from the computer,) but if it would be easier to send through iChat, I would like to try it. I've read the previous hint that says you can do it through AIM, but I don't have an AIM account and I don't really want one. Any info would be great. Thanks.

To send to a Cingular Blue (Ex ATT) phone number use the following curl command in your script.....

curl -d "recipient=$1&sender=$2&subject=$3&message=$4" \
http://www.mymmode.com/messagecenter/sendMessage.do

and call the script with
$1 the destination phone number (in xxx-xxx-xxxx format)
$2 your name or phone number
$3 Subject (Url encoded (for example replace spaces with +))
$4 Message (also URL encoded)

needlessly complex
Authored by: onan on Sep 18, '06 03:57:08PM

No need to make things so difficult. Just send mail to 2125551212@cingularme.com (using of course the actual phone number of your recipient). Much more straighforward than using the web form.

T-Mobile (needlessly complex)

While we're at it, to send an email to a T-Mobile user, address it to 1234567890@tmomail.net and replace the numbers with the recipient's 10-digit number.

Am I supposed to run this scrpt in AppleScript editor? I tried to save/compile and it said I can't have a quote after the -d identifier...

This isn't an applescript -- it's a bash script, to be run in the terminal. So, create the file in a "regular" text editor (like TextEdit), save the file as plain text, then follow the rest of the hint as written (change permissions, etc). Remember, this only works (as written) from the command line!

An exercise left to the reader is to rewrite this hint as an applescript. :-)

Does anyone know of a way to do this for Vodafone UK? Their software only works with Outlook on a PC.

Send SMS to Cingular users via Terminal
Authored by: rsnyder on Oct 25, '06 01:07:59PM

This is a very helpful hint. I know that there are other ways for people to send messages to cingular sms phones (iChat and email), but this script allows other scripts to send messages to cingular sms phones.

I use Nagios to monitor a bunch of servers, and for reasons that I won't go into here, my Nagios notifications to my phone get dropped by cingular when they are sent via sendmail on my Nagios server.

With this script, I can create a plugin to Nagios that uses this form to send the message, avoiding the "spam blocking" that cingular is using to drop my sendmail messages.

Thank you very much for this useful script.

This URL no longer seems to work. Anyone have a new one? For AT&T perhaps?
