Force iPod Update in iTunes 7 Apps
Trying to play some of those snazzy new games (I can't wait for Texas Holdem'!), but your brand new iTunes 7 says your iPod isn't up to date, but Update is grayed out under the new "Summary" screen? Just hit Restore once (don't worry, you have to authorize it before anything is wiped clean) and then hit Cancel in the next dialog.

iTunes should then realize there is an update available for your update. Happy gaming and movie watching!

[robg adds: My 3G iPod stubbornly refuses to display either color or video, so I can't really test this one. Must be about time for a hardware upgrade!]

Does this trick work to make "seamless playing" on older iPod too?

My iPod Video is shown as "up to date" with software version 1.1.2 which I got from "iPod Updater 2006-06-28". Obviously an update button is grayed out as well. While Games tab says that a software update is required to support games.

I can totally get color working on your iPod for a small $500 fee.

You know, I have the same problem with my 3G iPod - no color, no video! :)

The updater is now a part of iTunes - select your iPod in the source list in iTunes 7.

As a matter of fact, in order to get iTunes (7) or your iPod to see the needed iPod Updater, you MUST first install (update) to the latest quicktime - v7.1.3. Then, after you reboot (QT required, boo), and open iTunes, and plug in your iPod, it will magically download and see the 1.2 iPod updater. Install. Yea! You've got new features.

Anyone have any luck getting this to work with their Nanos? Restore>Cancel doesn't work for me. QT is up to date.

I'd like to try this but I have a more fundamental problem. I've never had any trouble with iTunes detecting my iPod until this weekend when I was prompted to upgrade to iTunes 7.0.

I am really at a loss because all the workarounds I find on the web assume that the iPod is being detected but not syncing correctly. Is there some way I can get my iPod update to 1.2 and then see if iTunes can detect it?

I have a PowerBook G4 using the most current version of mac os x.
