View TiVo Series2 Now Playing lists in Safari Other Hardware
If you have a TiVo Series2 box on the same local network as your Mac, you can view the Now Playing list in any web browser. Safari is the easiest, due to its use of Rendezvous/Bonjour Bookmarks. With the Bonjour Bookmarks enabled in Safari's preferences, you should see the name of your TiVo as a Bookmark in the Bonjour Collection. If you double-click it, it will take you to a page that says "Congratulations! You've successfully connected your TiVo box to your home network" and the URL should look something like this:

http://dvr-00d5.local./index.html

Change the http:// to https:// and change index.html to nowplaying/index.html:

https://dvr-00d5.local./nowplaying/index.html

When you visit that page, you may encounter a certificate error that you can ignore, and you will be prompted with a login window. Enter tivo as the login and your 10-digit Media Access Key, or MAK, as the password.

You will reach a web page titled Now Playing that lists all the programs currently in your TiVo's Now Playing area. It can be viewed in Classic or Folder mode. You can also download the recorded programs as .tivo files, though they cannot be viewed in Mac OS X.

Now we just need a .tivo player for Mac OS X. Great hint. Thanks.

Note that this requires Tivo software 7.x, so DirecTivo users need not apply. Times like this, I miss my old SA Tivo...

With the original .tivo file or any MPEG-1 encoded file, you can delete the show from your TiVo to save space and then share the file back to the TiVo when you want to watch the show again. Do this through the Mac version of Tivo Desktop: Video sharing is normally hidden, so hold down Command as you open TiVo Desktop in System Preferences. Check the TiVo commuity forums (linked from tivo.com) for more info.

Also, I don't want to get anyone into trouble so I'll just say this:

"If only there was a free Windows program that strips the DRM from .tivo files, I could run that in Parallels Desktop to turn the files into .mpg files. These will play in the Mac version of the free VNP video player (find it on SourceForge.org)."

Note that if you share your un-DRMed TiVo recordings on the Internet, TiVo can read your Media Access Key and terminate your account. The law may or may not protect you under what used to be called "fair use" whereby you download eposides of Robot Chicken onto your phone, to watch on the train to work.

Are you sure that the .tivo files can be pushed back to the Rivo? I tried this a couple of weeks ago and it did not work prroperrly with .tivo files. It worked with some MPEG files in my library though.

Interesting... The 15-minute CNET programs are "protected" as noted in the "links" column. Other shows I have recorded have "download" in that column allowing the file to be retrieved from the Tivo.

OK, what's an MAK, and how do I find it? Can't find anything like that in my TIVO settings screens or in the setup guide or user manual.

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious.

OK, found it doing a search at tivo.com

For any others not familiar with this, it's found at:

Read New Messages & Settings/Account & System Information

I kept looking under Settings
