Increase the speed of Transmit file transfers Apps
I discovered that if you are downloading or uploading zillions of files using the Transmit FTP client, you can greatly accelerate the file transfer. How? While downloading/uploading, open the Transfers tab in its Preferences, and start messing with the Maximum queue connections box.

Try to change this field to 400 then back to 200, then to 300 and then to 350. You will see, while you are messing with this field, that transfers start to accelerate.

Apparently, changing one time isn't enough. The more you change, the more it accelerates. But as far as I tried this, the limit appears to be four to five changes (in my machine) using values not over 400. Changing it too much, or using high values, can saturate the Mac OS' web connection socket and you will (probably) end up without a web connection and will have to restart the machine.

[robg adds: I tried this with a folder of 256 test documents, and I didn't notice any change at all as I played with the connections setting. If others can confirm or deny, it'd be interesting to try to figure out where/when this trick may work.]

Nothing happening here... Methinks poster just happened on a server where the DL speed was changing...

Or a server that could "give" more connections to the user?

A better way is to zip the files into one file. beam it up. then decompress it there. not only the final size smaller, there is less negotioation between the cleint and server. it's much much faster, even if the file size comparison is the same.

Here is a much better tip. Throw the Tonka Truck in the trash and get Interarchy. You don't have to screw around with nonsense like this to make it work the way it should. Much more that just a pretty face, Interarchy is much faster that Transmit right out of the box.

But Transmit looks much better, has two pannels, costs $9 less and I don't see any problems with it. ;-)

If you are going to be so superficial as to pick a program because of it's looks and not how it will improve your workflow then you had better reexamine your choice. Transmit may have held the title of best looking ftp app in the past but that baton has been passed to Interarchy. Plus Interarchy is a better program that Transmit if you are a professional web developer. But wait a minute. $9 is will to break the bank. I guess you had better stick with Transmit.

I have both programs, and they both have their roles to play. Transmit has a much-more Mac-like interface, and (important for me), it's got better Automator support. Interarchy has speed and power user tweaks galore.

Speed Download FTP is best for me
Authored by: imjarod on Aug 17, '06 03:18:09AM
Ever since Speed Download 4 came out, I ditched all my other FTP apps. SD4 has an excellent built-in FTP client that lets me bookmark all my servers and I have access to them all the time. Since it's also a central download manager, I never have to keep switch between applications. Truly awesome! (oh and it saved me from spending extra $$ on an independant ftp program)

I don't see anyhing about Synchronizing though. Any speed gain of a faster FTP client is lost if you have to recopy the entire site just to be sure it's current. Transmit does Syncing.

Doods: One word...Terminal.

scp file(s) user@domain.com:/home/directory/www

Type your password and walk away. Fast and simple if you know how — even for a Mac user like me.
