Create a Mail rule to highlight action-needed items Apps
To help Mail flag messages that may need a followup, I created a rule to identify those messages based on certain keywords. I named the rule Let Me Know, and set the 'if conditions' pop-up to Any, with these conditions:

Message content - contains - LMK

Message content - contains - let me know

Message content - contains - please advise

Message content - contains - please reply

When it's all set up, it looks like this. The rule will highlight messages that include the words "let me know," "LMK," "please advise," or "please reply." I'm surprised how well it works.

With it you can just create a 'needs action' or 'waiting for' etc tag and use smart folders to track them. Better yet, use it with Mailact-on as well and in a couple keystrokes you can delegate messages to be done later, mark them for as waiting for a reply, etc. You can even peg them with iCal alarms to remind you...
