Use a standalone download management tool

I was just browsing around in /System -> Library -> CoreServices (doesn't everyone!?), and found a little 1.5Mb app called VerifiedDownloadAgent. Intrigued, I opened it and was presented with a little Safari-like downloads manager window. You can drag URLs from anywhere into it, and it will then download those items to your desktop. Really handy! Just open it up, and you get a little window that hangs around for you to drop URLs into.

A good use I've found for it is transferring files over a network. You can drag the file from the remote volume into the window and the app will download it. This gives you the speed of the transfer, and an easy way to pause the transfer if you need to. If you're going to use the app regularly, drag it to your Dock, sidebar, or toolbar for fast access.
