Make video calls with Skype Apps
There is a not so easy to find Skype Mac beta to be found at Skype.com -- a version that allows one to video conference with other Skype users, be it on Windows or the Mac. Be aware that it does not work with FireWire webcams, such as the original iSight, but works fine with the new MacBook (Pro) -- I did not see any problems.

As usual with a beta: back up your Skype settings first!

Works beautifully with my MacBook. In fact, my wife commented on how much better the video quality is with my built-in iSight versus the Logitech QuickCams she and most of our friends have on their PCs. I haven't had any problems, crashes, or other unfortunate events yet, so I'd say this beta is pretty safe.

I did some testing of the Skype video beta this past weekend with my Powerbook G4 1Ghz & iSight camera, connected to a friend on brand new MBP in a different city.

Our observations:
Skype video is A LOT choppier than iChat video, but the sound quality is markedly better. We'd like to find a way to use just the video of iChat paired with the audio of Skype.

Now reading here that Skype doesn't work (alledgedly) with an iSight camera, perhaps the Powerbook doesn't have the processing power to make the video quality better. Still, a win for iChat.

Contrary to the experience reported above, it works fine with the iSight built into my MacBook. It was indeed choppier than other cameras and other video applications, besides taking a good 50% of the processor to use.

This story is inaccurate!
Sykpe Video works fine with the Apple iSight. Tested on several different Systems. Also the integrated iSight in the MacBooks works fine.

Neither me nor any of my friends who tried it had any problems with iSights. It works "out of the box"!

It works with a 'Logitech QuickCam Connect' on an iBook G4 1.2GHz.
It needs the macam Drivers.
Video is still choppy and cpu usage at 100%. I hope for performance improvements in later versions (now Skype 1.5.0.52)

Supported web cameras for skype?
Authored by: macwebmac on Aug 06, '06 06:16:36AM

Anyone has any list of supported web cameras for skype? Do I need to have mac drivers for video in skype to work or skype uses its own drivers. I have logitech web camera that doesnt have macosX drivers (but had macos9 drivers).
Will this might work or it definitly will not work as there are no system drivers for it?

Thanks
