If you select a number of messages in a Mail mailbox (say you select only those from the past month, but the mailbox contains many years of messages) and want to know how many are selected, here's a very simple way to do so.
Select the messages (Command-click or Shift-click), then click on any of the selected messages and drag them a few pixels. Mail displays a 'cursor' showing a multiple envelope icon and a number in a red circle: that number tells you how many messages you've selected.
[robg adds: Very simple, and I thought we'd documented it here once before, but I can't find it via a search, so perhaps not.]
