Jump to the top or bottom of a List view window Desktop
This is a short and simple hint, but it is an undocumented feature, I believe...

If you have a Finder window open in List view and have an item selected, it is possible to easily jump to the first or last item in the list by hitting Option-Up Arrow or Option-Down Arrow, respectively.

I found this only works if something is selected in the window already.

Um, why not simply hit home or end?

The home and end keys don't actually select the first or last file. This moves the selection to the top or to the bottom which is useful if you use other keyboard shortcuts to navigate through the filesystem

If anyone reading this knows a way to change the way of selecting items in the finder (or in an application with a standard list), please please PLEASE, post it here.
Currently:
Let's say you select items 4 to 7, then change your mind (or have gone too far) and want only items 4 to 6. You press Up arrow, and get items 3 to 7. *Sigh*
I would like to then get items 4 to 6 selected. I think it's a normal request.
Waiting for, if anyone can give me one - even very farfetched - reason someone would want the current behavior, that would reduce my growing frustation.

If you are willing to use the mouse as well, I suggest clicking on the file you want to deselect while pressing the "shift" key. The other items will remain selected, eg your files 4 to 6.
But I admit that this isn't anything really new, just thought it might help.

This is in the Finder's Help:

Select or deselect non-adjacent icons in a list ⌘ + click

and it works.

I feel your pain. I don't understand why they changed that behavior either.

For all who agree with this, please send feedback to Apple:
[link:]http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/

If you want to save some time, here is what I just send them:

I don't like how the selection system works.
For example, in the Finder, working with the keyboard:
You select items 4 to 7, then change your mind (or have gone too far) and want only items 4 to 6. You press Up arrow, and get items 3 to 7. *Sigh*
Instead, I would like to get items 4 to 6 selected.

The more frustrating is I don't see any reason the current behavior would be preferred.

I'm not the only one thinking that.

Please, correct this.

Thank you

The more people report, more chance we have to see an evolution.

Several of the less obvious standard keyboard shortcuts are listed at ...

... among other places.
