An easy way to view message counts in Mail Apps
The Mail application does not show the count of messages in a mailbox every time. At times it's frustrating. Although I couldn't find in what circumstances it does, I just gave up.

Recently I realized that one could enable the column Number in the mailboxes, and get a count quickly. I believe that people usually do not enable this column, so many may not realize it's available.

[robg adds: The message count should always be visible in the title of the window, but ... having now used the Number column for a few minutes, I like it much better. And yes, it's right there in the contextual menu when you control-click on the column headers, but I'd never really noticed it, so maybe others haven't as well.]

Using the column 'Number' you are not viewing the count of the messages, you are viewing the order in which the mail was received.

I think like Rob pointed out, referring to the title bar to see how many messages are inside a particular mailbox is the easiest.

I would be willing to hear when exactly Mail fails to display the count of how many messages are in a mailbox as I have never seen it fail.

To see why exactly this may get confusing, go to the 'sent' mailbox and sort by the number field. Then sort by the 'date sent' column so most recently sent is listed at the top.

Exactly. It doesn't make sense to have a column that shows the number of items in the list. The Number column is just that, the message number. So if you have, say, 20 message in a mailbox/folder, but you've received and deleted thousands of messages, the newest messages will show an extremely high number, yet you only have 10 messages in the mailbox/folder. There's no way you can use that as the current message count. Therefore, this is not a hint and should be removed.

Actually, I just tested this and the original poster is correct.

I created a new mailbox, copied 10 messages into and they were numbered 1 through 10.

I deleted a message, and the numbers adjusted themselves to be 1 through 9.

I deleted another message, and the numbers adjusted to 1 through 8.

I gave up after 5 tries.

I like the Mail plug-in called DockStar. It shows the various counts of unread messages.

Also to refresh and view the exact counts for All boxes and folders, just control-click any mailbox and choose Get Info. This will count all messages for any IMAP account.

If you look in Mail help under Applescript it suggests that a script could be written that would count all the messages in the mail boxes. Also one of the default scripts included in Mail will count total messages in all mailboxes and present the findings in a mail message. It isnt as convenient as looking at a live message count. But depending on the size of your mailboxes it shouldnt take all that long to run the script.

I just wish there was a way to make Mail list the totals, rather than just unread mail, in each mailbox on the sidebar. That would help me.
