Open multiple copies of After Effects at the same time Apps
Here's how to use multiple copies of After Effects at the same time. First, make sure it isn't running, then navigate to the After Effects program in the Finder.

Control click on the application and select Show Package Contents from the pop-up menu. Navigate into the Contents -> MacOS folder, and then make an alias to the After Effects file in that folder. Place the alias somewhere easy to get to, like your Desktop (and/or drag it into your Dock for quick access). Now you can use this link to open After Effects, and it will open as many times as you click on the link. Note that it will open the Terminal also, and show all the open process.

By this way you can render in one copy of After Effects while working in another one.

[robg adds: I don't have After Effects, so I can't test this one.]

This should also have the added benefit of utilizing dual proc machines better. Currently even with a large render, AE seems to only use 60-70% of processing power, sometimes less. So, with this hint, you should be able to push that number higher.

However, this doesn't seem to work for me with AE 6.5 on 10.4.6

Just tried this with Safari and it works great.

Perfect for when you need to log into the same site with multiple logins, i.e. gmail with multiple accounts.

I would imagine this works for other applications as well. The thing to remember is that once you close the terminal the instance of the app will close as well. This was one feature of Mac OS that I have been trying to figure out for quite a while as other *nix OSes can do it no problem.

I wonder if you could even open Entourage under different identities at the same time???

As for being able to close the terminal window, read the hint referenced in some other comment by me below.

As for being able to run an application as another user, you can do so with the sudo command. That, though, will only be possible for admin users, since they are the only ones able to run "sudo" (unless you tinker with the OS).

Following the refenced linked below, this is how you would do it

sudo -u NAME_OF_OTHER_USER /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail

Since you will be asked to enter an admin password, you should not be appending any & (again, see referenced hint), since if you do so you will not be able to enter it, and the process will stand by, invisible, in the limbus waiting for the password, as Activity Monitor would reveal.

Hinted repeated, several, several several times. For a general purpose description (i.e., doing this with almost any application) see hint "Launch multiple instances of any given application". Rob, I think you could add a reference to this in the comments of the hint.

Quicksilver has a "Launch a Copy" as part of the "Process Manipulation" plug-in. Does this for any application bundle without any terminal work.

It is not working for me. Is it becasue I am running 10.3.9?? Or Because I am running AFX 8?? I would not think so as it seems to work just the same for other programs. It will not let me drag it to the dock or side panel of my finder window, by my drives/applications/library etc.
