Burn with an 'unsupported' Pioneer 111D DVD writer Storage Devices
This may be already known, but it was a surprise to me when I created a slideshow with iPhoto and iDVD. Although the Pioneer 111D DVD writer is shown in System Profiler as being unsupported, I was offered a choice of the internal UJ-846 or the Pioneer to burn my project to. I next tried burning a folder, and it also burnt fine, as did iTunes.

This is on an iMac G5 with Tiger 10.4.7 and the drive in a FireWire case. It makes me very happy, after many fights with the UJ-846 to try and get it to burn a DVD reliably -- I have enough coasters for a very large party :-). I have seen reports of the Pioneer 110D working fine, but none for the 111D. Anyone else care to report their experiences if they have one of these drives?

The 110D worked fine for me until I tried updating the firmware to the latest release using DVDFlashX in my 15-inch 800 Mhz Flat Panel iMac. The firmware flash seemed to be going just fine and then it reported an error message and after that it was completely dead. No LEDs, drive spin up, or anything.

I read on another forum that if you update the firmware, you HAVE to use a true UDMA 100 IDE connection and I think the iMac is a true UDMA 66, so this is probably why it failed for me. That or else the kernel I was attempting to install was bad. Atleast it was on warranty and I should be getting the replacement soon.

I bought this drive and installed it in my PowerMac back in May. So far I haven't had a single issue. I did flash it to the latest firmware using my PC. That unlocked 16x -R burning in Toast using Imitation media. Before 12x was the max I could burn at. Itunes can burn CDs and iDVD 04 (the latest version I have) can burn movies without any special software installed. A great, solid drive for anyone wanting to replace their Superdrive. Newegg.com is selling them for less than $40 now. xlr8yourmac.com has a drive database where people can report about how well a drive works for them. The 111D has a lot of posts and all pretty much say the same thing: it just works.

iLife '06 added support for "unsupported" DVD drives. I use a Mad Dog Dual Layer drive via firewire. It didn't work until I installed iLife '06. Installing iLife upgraded all the disc burning apps.

Great burner. Stumbled across it while I was searching for a DVD drive for my old PowerMac G3 350.

After searching to no avail for a 110, I thought I'd take a risk and get a 111 seeing as I plan on building a Core 2 Duo PC I figured if I fail, I will use it in that.

No such trouble. Is bootable, mounts cd's, dvd's, the works. Haven't tried burning anything using it yet.

Very pleased with the build quality of the pioneer drive. Simple, clean, very mac like. And also it fits in my G3 tower perfectly. No need to remove the the tray bezel, just slides smoothly back into the tower without snagging.

Best of all, it makes DVD playback alot smoother and quicker than my Al G4 PowerBook 1.25Ghz.

After failing to upgrade the firmware in my 110D and turning into a brick, I returned it to Pioneer as it was still on warranty.

The replacement arrived today and it was a Pioneer DVR-111DBK! How nice. I popped it inside my trusty 15-inch flat panel iMac, set the 111 to "cable select" mode, and fired the iMac back up. Just finished reading a CD without a problem. Thanks Pioneer for replacing it, but why can't they create a reliable way to upgrade their firmware from a Mac? This one has 1.19, but I'm leery to try going up to their latest, 1.23. If I ever figure it out, I'll post back.

I installed one of these (a 111) in my dual G4 and have only just tried to burn a DVD. Any blank DVD does not mount but I can playback DVDs OK. Checking the firmware, it is 1.02...If that is the problem then, reluctantly, I will have to take it out, install in a PC, try and upgrade the firmware etc etc.

But before I go through that tortuous path, are there any software checks I can make first?

I am on 10.4.7

This discussion peripherally addresses a basic compatability question that I can't figure out.

I am interested in using one of the new, cheap Lightscribe DVD burners, other than the LaCie. HP and Samsung both have burners available for less than half the price of the LaCie. My question is whether using Patchburn these drives will be functional on my B&W G3 (upgraded with Daystar G4/600).

I can burn with Toast and do Lightscribe with the 3rd party Disclabel. Will this work or should I just go for the 'official' Mac supported LaCie drive?

How to fix this problem: It is not a firmware problem. Download PatchBurn and run it. You will find that your drive on Tiger is now supported. I just put a Pioneer DVR-116DBK in a G5 2.0 dual, and it reported "unsupported". I ran PatchBurn, and it now reports "supported". Real easy.
