Sort bookmarks into folders for a Safari speed increase Web Browsers
I haven't found a way to reliably test time this, but it's perceputally noticeable, and several friends who tried it confirmed it:

Safari seems to slow down as the number of items in the Bookmarks bar and Bookmarks menu grows. This slowdown appears to be more noticeable when launching Safari. So to speed it up a bit, try to move as many bookmarks as possible out of the Bookmarks bar and menu, and into other collections.

[robg adds: This is the latest in a continuing series of Safari speed-up tips. To summarize what we have so far, you can make Safari much faster by disabling JavaScript and RSS, disabling unused languages and deleting autofill entries, removing cached FavIcons, and using short names for bookmarks.]

Wasn't there a speedup hint about removing RSS too?

You are correct -- I've added that one into the footnote now.

thanks;

Interesting... I just put my bookmarks in a folder in the Bookmarks menu, and pages do seem to be loading faster. Would Safari be reading the top level of the menu's contents (for what reason, btw?) and not sub-folders?

I'm guessing that the issue is that Safari needs to figure out what to be able to render to screen, and it looks for: all menu items (including submenus) and all bookmark bar items (not including submenus).

This is a guess, though.

Safari does have to draw the icons for each site as part of the menus. It may be checking to see if those icons have updated when you start Safari, and then checking sub-menus less frequently.

But, that's just a guess.

Translation, if you delete all of Safari's useful features it will run faster.

I couldn't help thinking the same thing while reading "robg adds" comments in the hint.

Shorten individual bookmarks

Long strings of text that make up some web sites' bookmarks also slow down Safari.

Edit them down and at the very least, Safari will launch faster and the bookmark menu will appear more quickly when first accessed.
