Take notes while watching a full-screen video Apps
If you're a video editor or otherwise involved in the entertainment industry, you know how important it is to review videos in full screen mode. But at the same time you're reviewing videos in full screen mode, you often need to type up notes on the very video that you're watching.

So you end up having to switch back-and-forth between full screen mode and regular mode, just so you can type up notes in your favorite note-taking program. This is a real pain, and can cause you to miss some important details of your video when it's not in full screen mode. Worse yet, you may end up pausing your video every time you leave full screen mode, which takes up even more time.

The solution?? Very simple. Go into Apple's Stickies, create a new sticky note, and change that note to a floating window choosing Note: Floating Window from the menu. That sticky note will now float on top of all other windows, including any videos that you are watching in full screen. It's perfect! You now have the best of both worlds; you can take notes while continuing to watch a video in full screen.

This also works in other programs that support floating windows as well, such as StickyBrain and others.

[robg adds: If you really have to do a lot of this, I would strongly recommend a second monitor as a better long-term solution. That way, you're not covering up some of the movie clip with the floating window. However, the above solution would work well for work on laptops in the field, for instance.]

Other possible solutions would be using anything in dashboard that lets you type. Dashboard developer mode would let you pull the widget out of dashboard and widgets are always on top anyway.

If you are using stickies a program called GeekBind will allow you to make the window translucent so you can gain some visibility of what is behind the sticky.

You actually don't need GeekBind to make Stickies translucent. Just press Command-Option-T when the Stickie is active (or choose translucency from the menu).

Stickies already has a transparency command alt+command+T.

Or you can use one of the movie players that support layering for their fullscreen windows like Movie Time: [link:]http://www.sansworks.com, set it to appear below redular windows, (or even on desktop), and take notes in your favorite text editor, like TextEdit.

you can use unsanity's WindowShadeX to make _any_ window float on top. http://www.unsanity.com/haxies/wsx

it is now a universal binary and even lets you set a custom amount of transparence for the windows.

Another good .app to do this is sidenote. http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/17654. It is a notepad that slides out from the left or right side of the screen. It has great features including export to .rtfd, color labeling notes, it can handle drag and dropping massive images, formating (font and text,) Mail note, services, and hot key access and note configuration. Oh yea, and it's free. I love it, and use it over stickies!
