Quickly alphabetize Safari's bookmarks Web Browsers
One thing that bugs me is that there is no option in Safari to alphabetize bookmarks. I had a crazy idea about how to accomplish this, and it seems to work. Hopefully I'm not missing something more obvious.

What I did was open the Bookmarks window (Bookmarks: Show All Bookmarks), put the links I wanted to alphabetize into a folder, and then dragged that folder into the Finder. The Finder alphabetizes the bookmarks; you can then just drag the folder back into the Bookmarks window. You probably have to set the Finder to arrange files by name before it will work. Hope this helps!

[robg adds: When you drag the folder back, you'll now have two folders, the original and the sorted one. Just delete the original, and you're set. You can also do this without first creating a Safari folder. Just select all the bookmarks to be alphabetized, drag them into a new folder in the Finder, open that folder (make sure it's set to sort by name or use column view), then drag the now-sorted bookmarks back into Safari's Bookmarks window. Again, you'll have duplicates, so just delete the originals (which will be grouped above the newly-placed list). I wonder if any of this is scriptable...]

Or you could use Safari Enhancer, does tons of other things as well.

I stopped using the built in bookmark function (in Safari and earlier in Explorer and Netscape) a LONG time ago. URL Manager Pro is the way to go and it puts an icon in the menu bar that makes your bookmarks available in a pulldown menu whether you're in the browser or not. I have 1,521 bookmarks and the built in bookmark function just doesn't give me the flexibility and variety of functions that I need.

Is alphabetizing scriptable? I don't know if it's a script, but somebody on Ars Technica forums wrote a small app to sort Safari bookmarks. Works like a charm! Do a search there for "sortosaurus", or download it at:

Quickly alphabetize Safari's bookmarks

I use Bookdog 3.6 universal shareware, I can have it run on daily or other schedules to sort at warp speed on my Dual G5 2.0 my hundreds of folders and subfolders and, within them, all my bookmarks.

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/27095

Safari is my primary browser and Firefox my secondary, so it's really handy that Bookdog sorts in some other browsers. It has a "migrate" command to move new and changed bookmarks in either direction between Safari and Firefox. I just did that now and got this report: 1853 bookmarks were copied. 1843 existing bookmarks in Firefox were deleted because they were duplicated by new bookmarks copied in from Safari."

Occasionally, I have it check for duplicates and then delete one, modify or tag them as permanently acceptable.

Bookdog also has the capability to go through one's bookmarks and verify whether they're still valid and provide options for fixing those that have been re-directed.

Respectfully, Norm

I've been evaluating WebnoteHappy, the new kid on the block with a silly name in the alternative bookmark manager category, and it's quickly growing on me. I never got comfortable with others I've tried but this one may be the keeper.

Some bookmarks don't get exported
Authored by: magnamous on Jul 12, '06 09:09:17PM

I decided to use this hint to make it easier to sort through and reorganize my eleventeen million bookmarks, so I dumped all of my bookmark folders onto the desktop. I worked on it yesterday, and when I was done, I dragged it back into Safari and deleted the desktop copy. I dragged it back to the desktop again today to work on it some more, and I discovered that in the desktop copy, a couple of folders with 10-12 links each were empty. It would seem that this is perhaps a bit buggy, so be careful!

This hint was published, somehow, in Macworld a couple of days ago, and yes, there's some issue with the sub folders, you can keep just two I think, but the rest are not imported back to Safari.

IMPORTANT TIP:
If you export bookmarks to Finder and rename them there, Safari won't recognize the new names! First rename the bookmarks in Safari, then drag the folder to Finder for sorting only, then drag the folder back to Safari. (I'm using Safari 5.0.3 and OS X 10.6.6.)
