CD/DVD printing on Epson Printers Printers
The Epson printers that have CD/DVD printing capabilities have four arrows (triangles) that must be lined up -- two on the tray and two on the carrier. The arrows on the tray are difficult to see. Painting the arrows on the tray with white fingernail polish makes the arrows very visible. You should mask the arrows first, so as not to get the fingernail polish on other parts of the tray.

[robg adds: OK, it's clearly not an OS X hint. But it's related to using hardware with the system, so I thought I'd run it as test. Now that we have the ability to rate the hints, it'll be easy to tell if this is the kind of thing people like or not. I haven't seen these printers, but one concern might be a transfer of some of the polish onto your blank CDs; perhaps that's not an issue, though, based on the tray's design.]

Transfer of polish to the CDs is not an issue. I believe the hint just suggests painting the alignment arrows, then letting the nail polish dry.

It's just a way to improve the black-arrow-on-black-background problem.

BTW, the arrows do hav to be perfect alighned - as long as the trays are slightly closer to the machine (print heads) than not, it's smart enough to self align as it draws it in and calculates - though the white arrows will undoubted help.

Also note that only Epson specific drivers with the CD/DVD printing, the GIMP drivers do not - printing 8 by 11 works fine.

To print borderless via the Mac (versus directly using mem cards) you need to select Epson boderless as your printer choice.

I've been looking at buying one of these printers. Best Buy says the R220 is end of life'd. Anyone have info on if-when Epson is coming out with new printers w/ the CD/DVD printing capability, and what features and price range these replacements will have? Thanks.

They just released a slew of new printers and updated the main line 300/500/800 line a few months ago ... I'm not an expert but it seems like the main printer companies only really do two main releases/revisions a year - one before the hlidays and one in spring ... most of Epsons stuff this year was more high end stuff like the 5 or 6 ink monochrome one for photographers ... I've had a couple epsons - print quality great - the CD/DVd printing could nnot be easier and they look classy - get their paper (reasonable priced) for photos - they look extra nice or if you want high end stuff, they have speciality 25-100 year paper. Of course, ink is not cheap - $60 for a 6 pack at costco but the printouts are nice ... the draft mode is pretty worthless - unless you're giving away printouts to the other side on a lawsuit - then technically there are fine light, light, light gray dots on the page but more lemon-juice teen spy stuff ...

And I'd sure like to know if/when Canon is going to release printers in the U.S. with CD/DVD printing capability.

First of all, I like the hint. I already did this but with a cut out of white tape left over from some labeling work. Second, the R220 works well for me. I had a R200 fail and replaced it. As refurbs or sales on the R220 come out note that the price is actually about the same as the price of the included ink cartridges, so the printer is almost free. ($13*6)=$88! and I have seen them for $69 from time to time.)

Great idea! I've been using the R200 for quite a while and often times I need to do about 50 DVD prints, so that little tip will help the process. Thanks for sharing. Would never have thought of it otherwise.

BTW, for those of you don't know, the application The Printshop 2 contains CD/DVD templates based on iDVD 5 layouts. The templates can be formatted for Epson R200.

I think this hint is too obvious. But, what would be more helpful is if the hint suggested a way to improve the success rate of printing to the Disk. Too often it rejects the tray and pushes it back out, regardless of the arrow alignment. In fact, on my R200 I have found more success with the tray arrows slightly past the printer arrows.

I've used a couple of Epson R300s for a few quick (overnight) jobs. One of the disc trays has become so worn that it requires a little pressure to coax it in even after it seems to be feeding initially. I didn't notice it immediately as it was intermittent at first, but it seemed to happen after about 250 discs.

As the tray starts to feed and the edge of it starts to go under the rollers along the print path watch to see if it stops due to lack of traction and gets reject at that point. It may be that your tray is also worn and requires replacement (or a little nudge).

I think it's a great little hint. Kind of one of those things you see and say "Yeah that's so obvious." but you just don't think of it. I was just trying to print a DVD the other day and my computer is in one room with very bright natural light and the printer is in another room which was quite dim. I was squinting and feeling around on the tray for the arrow. This would've solved my situation nicely.

On a side note I have noticed my R200 to be somewhat finicky on printing to disc. Sometimes it'll spit it out and other times it's perfect.
