10.4: A fix for a Keychain Access issue on Intel Macs System 10.4
You may have noticed with your new Intel Mac that keychains absolutely do not work. You are unable to save new passwords to your keychain, and all keychains previously saved on PowerPC Macs are unreadable. Even if you load up the PowerPC version of Keychain Access using Pacifist or something, you can access your PowerPC keychains, but you still won't be able to reveal passwords.

All of these issues are easily fixed. Simply install the firmware update from Apple. I have a Macbook Pro 15", and there was a firmware update I needed. (The same update that is required before using Boot Camp to install Windows XP on your Mac.)

Now I can save new passwords to my keychain, and my PowerPC version of Keychain Access can reveal my old passwords. (The Intel version of Keychain Access still cannot open a PowerPC-created keychain file, though.)

This, of course, is not true for all Intel-based Mac users. The keychain on my MacBook works fine and always has.

My keychains also work fine on my iMac and my MacBook.

On the iMac I used Migration assistant for User folder and on the MacBook I didn't but synced my Keychains via .Mac.

Same here!

The poster of that "hint" is a cretin!

The fact he has a problem on HIS mac makes him thinks all macs have the same problem!!!

Talk about egocentrism!

Hmm, I haven't noticed any problems with my keychains, but they are all new to this MacBook Pro. I haven't migrated stuff to it yet -- I might not ever do that. I admit I'm a bit confused about the "System" keychain. I don't know what it is or whether I should care, but when I was poking about in Keychain Access, I found I can't change its password. I don't know why I would, so I left it at that, for now.

I am glad the OP took the time and trouble to submit a hint, and sorry that some people chose to be insulting instead of helpful.

What clown designed the iPod calendar reminder, which won't show you the Location field? Guess they always meet in the same room at Apple?

Oh my god, can somebody confirm that PPC created keychains can't be used on Intels? This is extremely bad stuff, never heard of it, sounds like a major bug.

Keychains (new and migrated from PPC) have worked fine for me on Intel iMacs, MacBooks, Minis, and MacBook Pros. Sounds like the original author has some keychain corruption - or just bad luck.

I migrated my PPC keychain over manually (drag and drop from mounted DMG) and have had no issues beyond the normal prompts when doing this.

I migrated my ibook to a MacBook Pro 15" and I haven't had any keychain issues either.

The only SMC updates available are for the iMac, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro . . . which leads one to believe that this isn't a problem for plain ol' MacBooks.

The only keychain problem I've seen involves .Mac sync. Whenever I enable keychain syncing between my iMac Core Duo & MBP, syncing screws up securityd & no passwords will work until I reboot.

Importing PPC keychains to Intel based Macs
Authored by: slyph on Jun 22, '06 01:42:06PM

I had the problem with loading ppc keychains on intel based macbooks. here is the solution.

Open Keychain Access and make a new keychain with exactly the same name and activate it.

Close keychain and replace your migrated keychain with the same wth the ones you just created.
Open Keychain Access again and you should see your informations of the migrated keychain active and working again.

Hope this helps someone.

Almost by definition, this won't be a problem on ALL Intel Macs. However, there are only so many words in the title line...sorry to have confused many.

Rob - a disclaimer in the hint is appropriate
Authored by: Krioni on Jun 23, '06 08:12:18AM

Rob, you should really put a disclaimer in the hint that this only applies to some Intel Macs (I have one, and haven't even _heard_ of this problem before). The way the hint is written (not just the title!) it strongly suggests that this is universally true of all Intel-based Macs. I was sure when reading the hint there would be a comment in square brackets from you pointing out that this only applies to a small handful of people. Please let people know. I'm not even sure this counts as a hint.

It is highly unlikely that the firmware would have effect on a userland application that doesn't address any specific hardware. This hint is moot.

To the first few posters: Sorry guys but the author has a point. I have problems with my MacBook, so to state that there isn't any problems on MB is far from correct.

If the problem lies within the apps unable to get access to the keychain or in the keychain, I am not able to say. However, fact is that I have two apps, Gmail Status and iScrobbler, that keeps asking me for persmission to access the keychain and it's driving me crazy.

I've found adding the .keychain extension can help, if this was not already added.
