10.4: Run Warcraft III on Intel Macs

I had installed Warcraft III after seeing numerous reviews online that it worked fine on Intel macs, but every time I started it, it promptly crashed. Console.app, however, notified me that it was trying to load LiveType.component, and failing.

With some simple debugging, Warcraft III works now, after following these simple steps:

  1. Navigate to /Library/Quicktime/
  2. Create an Archive of LiveType.component
  3. Delete LiveType.component
  4. Empty your trash
That's it; now you can enjoy Warcraft III. Note that for some reason, Warcraft III will attempt to load LiveType.component even if you move it. It seems it needs to be deleted for Warcraft III to work. Relocating the component and logging out and back in may work, but I didn't try it.

[robg adds: I imagine that this fix will break Apple's LiveType application (and probably other apps that rely on the component), hence you'll need to expand the archive and replace the component any time you want to use LiveType.]
