Run Internet Explorer 6 on Intel Macs via WINE Web Browsers
The following was posted to start this thread in the ArsTechnica forums: It took some work, but I was able to get a working (if a bit buggy) version of IE6 running on OS X via WINE. I used the installer script from IEs4Linux. After resolving its dependencies, it ran through the IE6 install just fine, then hung during the IE5.5 install, at which point I killed it.

If I remember correctly, the version of WINE I am running was obtained here (but don't quote me on that, I installed it a while ago). I installed cabextract using DarwinPorts (because the version available through Fink was apparently too old).

Should be fairly straightforward, thanks to the IEs4Linux installer script. Enjoy! Further into the thread, there's a post by bupkis with a more detailed version of the instructions, which will probably prove helpful if you're going to try this.

[robg adds: I haven't tried this one, and with Parallels Desktop running IE6 (and IE7 betas) very nicely, I probably won't use this hint. The advantage of this solution, however, is that you won't need either Parallels or Windows to run IE6, thereby saving quite a bit of money.]

I'm guessing this tip only works for Intel Macs, right?

Believe so. Am told a Powerpc version is being worked on yet. Who knows? But with an Intel machine its running mostly native I'm told. WINE will be awsome, no need for a bug and virus infested platform! No paying for a junk OS!

Don't set this up on a production machine - its still Alpha software.

if you go to the darwine project site, there is a newer version of wine for os x.
the linked version is .7, but on the darwine site, it is up to .10

and there is a PPC version that includes QEMU, or uses QEMU for intel emulation, not sure if its bundled or not, haven't tried it yet.

itt should work, but i woudn't put any money on it's performance

Something is fishy !!
Authored by: jago_lebow on Jun 11, '06 07:53:05AM

I have seen this posted on multiple other places and tried it, something is really fishy here, maybe I don't know what I'm doing but when I tried to install the ies4linux it tries to make a coppy of my whole root dir!!!

Wine works! It runs the mine sweeper game.

I've also got ies4linux to work on debian running in parralles ( but javascript doesn;t work ).

If any one gets this to work correctly please provide some more instructions...
