Hints site upgrade happening Friday afternoon... Site News
Macosxhints will be going offline Friday, May 26th, around 1PM Pacific time. We are (finally) upgrading to the latest Geeklog release. This is a somewhat large project, with some complex data migration to be done, and we want to make sure we do it right. As such, the downtime may be substantial -- anywhere from two to five hours -- or possibly more if things go more slowly than we expect.

When we return, you'll be seeing a new look for the site. I'd love to tell you that it's a new pro theme designed by one of the world's best designers...but I'm really not a good liar :). For some of you, it will look similar to what you already see here, as I modified an existing theme from the current site. For others, though, especially those who don't login, the new look will be notably different. As with many things I do on the site, I expect some will like it, many won't care, and a very vocal group will thoroughly hate it :). I have plans to bring other themes (to match the ones we currently have) online shortly, but as of the re-launch, we'll have just one look available. I just haven't had the time to work on the other themes yet.

After the new system is online, if you find something broken, please let us know (there's a contact link in the footer of every page). There are some new features, which I'll summarize in a post once we get back online, but mostly, things will work as they have before...

Sounds great. Let's hope the new Geeklog's RSS feeds play more nicely with Safari.

Yes, please pay special attention to the RSS feeds. I constantly get updated article feeds even when no articles are updated, or else up to 5 instances of each article within the feed. It's really really broken.

It's got nothing to do with the feed coming from macosxhints, so the upgrade probably won't fix the problem. It has to do with how the feeds are distributed through Macworld, and we're working on fixing that issue -- but it's completely distinct from Geeklog's generation of the RSS feed itself, which is fine (I check it every time I receive a complaint).

Because it's a separate problem, it may still exist even after the upgrade.

Don't you kind of start to think that if it's requiring you to have major downtime every time you upgrade, then maybe you shouldn't be using Geeklog? There are so many different content management systems out there that surely one of them can beat Geeklog's features and not require massive downtime...

Actually Rob didn't state that it would definitely take up to 5 hours, he said that for them to ensure they do it right it might take them that long.

Any CMS upgrade that involves database changes can run into issues during the upgrade. This happens no matter what system you use.

Actually having downtime sucks. Having extra downtime you didn't plan ahead for because you didn't give yourself enough time sucks a lot more.

Here's hoping it only takes an hour or less, but let's be glad they have planned out the time to work on things if something crops up.

And, as it turned out, the original estimate was very optimistic/unrealistic. But
glad to see the site back online although I fall into the "too much white" camp.

Do you have update instructions?

Did you document what you had to do to update the site? If you could make a
step by step document available it would be greatly appreciated. Some of us are
running old 1.3.7 Geeklog sites and want to update and don't like the Blojsom Blog
software in Server 10.4.6. I would even be happy to pay a small fee for delailed

Working on Macs in a PC environment is like putting on fireworks for the blind. Any noise scares everyone and no one see the brilliance of your work.
