I have a moderate set of Mail rules for common contacts. For not so common contactsm, I use the Mail feature of checking the sender of a message against recent recipients. Create a new rule (I call mine Recent) with this condition:
Sender is in my Previous Recipients.
That marks this message as something you probably want to see. My rule then moves the message to a Recent folder, plays a sound, and stops processing rules. I have the Recent rule after all my known sender rules, but before all the junk and generic processing rules. If you keep everything in your inbox, you might change the color, or just play a sound.
It is great, because whenever I send a one-time email, the reply comes back and bypasses my local junk filter. It is also marked out as something I am waiting for, so it stands out from the junk that makes it to my inbox.
