Bring back minimized Safari windows via a hotkey Web Browsers
I sometimes find myself having Safari open, and the only browser window is minimized. Usually you use the mouse to bring back the minimized window, or hit Control-F3 (Move focus to the Dock) and the arrow keys. But here's a much quicker way:

Just make sure Safari is the active app, then hit Command-L -- this is the shortcut for File: Open Location, and it will restore the minimized window from the Dock, instead of opening a new window.

[robg adds: This also works for Camino, but not OmniWeb or Firefox. OmniWeb opens a new window, and Firefox does nothing.]

This doesn't work if you have more than 1 safari window open. FYI.

To clarify, if all the windows are minimized, it opens one of them (though, unpredictably, not necessarily the last one minimized!).

Right, that's why it wasn't working for me. Pretty useless, since I just hide the Safari window, or use tabs...

Being a Switcher (TM) myself, it was always extremely frustrating to me that switching the focus to an app didn't un-minimize it as well (In WinXP this is the default behavior.) So I searched for a solution and finally found one in a little program called Witch. This works like Apple-Tab except it shows every single window open (if you have more than one open in an app) and will un-minimize windows from the dock. You can make the key-combo to access this anything you like. Give it a try!

you can also press Cmd+T to open a new tab (if you have tabs enabled). Usually I then immediately press Cmd+W to close the newly created blank tab.

Or cmd-N

Cmd-N also does the job.

Bring back virtually any window via a hotkey
Authored by: jagboy on May 25, '06 01:47:57AM
Here's an IMHO waaaay better one: And it works for any window and is really fast: Hit Apple Key + H, this will hide the window(s) and the focus will change to the previous application in the foreground. To restore the window simply Alt + Tab to the program and the windows will autorestore. This will: a) Save you space in your dock b) Works for various windows c) Will work for literally any application Enjoy, Pablo

I'll go on record as considering this Safari/Camino "feature" a severe bug. I've stumbled across it before, and I just can't stand an application patronizing me along the lines of: "You didn't really want to minimize that window forever, did you?"

When I minimize a window; I want it minimized. End of story.

But I'm glad at least some of you find this useful ;-)

I am all with you. The Finder has the same 'bug'. When I minimize a Finder window, I want it minimized until I unminize it. But if all Finder windows are minimized and you switch back to the Finder, e.g. by clicking on the desktop, one of them will become unminimized.
