Try a low CPU usage alternative to folder actions Apps
Tiger only hintI had a few folder actions set up, and noticed that the System Events process was eating up to 30% of my CPU. I came across Proxi, and not only have I been able to configure message and audio alerts for certain folders, I have been able to automate folders in ways I wasn't able to with Automator (though, in truth, I've only tinkered with Automator briefly).

The program is being promoted as an aid for use with Griffin devices, but I have found it incredibly useful without actually owning any of them. It's still in early beta, but I've had no problems with it, and am finally able to have folder actions, like alerts, with minimal CPU usage.

[robg adds: I haven't tried Proxi yet, but it does look promising, so it's been downloaded an placed on the 'to look at' list.]

I'm going to take a look at Proxi, but I'm just curious what CPU you are on where System Events is using 30%.

I have folder actions enabled and have actions attached to several folders. I've been watching System Events in Activity Monitor and it has been sitting on 0.00% for a few minutes.

I'm on a G5 Gual 2GHz, but I wouldn't think a slower processor would make it behave so dramatically different. Any thoughts?

I will chime in here and add - the CPU usage of folder actions is too much for me too on an older (COUGH COUGH) pre-1GHz Mac...

Kickin' the tires on Proxi and it seems pretty cool - but you do have to leave the app running at all times. That to me is a checkmark against it...

Well, CPU usage is a bit misleading these days as apps will get the time taken away if it's needed elsewhere. In reality the OS is going to try to fill the CPUs at all times in order to achieve maximum performance. Would you rather it deliberately run things slowly?

Remember you can always use launchd to monitor queues, paths, and files.
