Avoid blank iPhoto images in iMovie projects

iPhoto now lets you organize your photos without copying them over into its library, so that the users can keep all of their pictures in any folder structure without duplicating them in the iPhoto library. If you pick this option in iPhoto's preferences, it places links to these photos in the Originals folder, which is the same location it would have otherwise copied them into. This works fine for the most part, but it seems like the rest of the iLife suite still needs to adapt to this development.

For example, iMovie themes have drop zones where you can drag and drop pictures from your iPhoto albums. However, you may soon discover that these linked photos get rendered as completely white rectangles. The easiest solution I found was to edit that picture in iPhoto. Even just a tiny bit of editing (or a simple rotation) will do, as iPhoto then saves a real copy of the edited version in its Modified folder. Now, when you use the photo (which looks almost the same when viewed through an album) in your iMovie theme, it will work fine.

Hopefully you will use only a few pictures for these themes, so replicating them does not defeat the purpose of linking to them instead of copying.
