Prevent automatic playback of embedded QuickTime Web Browsers
Irritated by the automatic playing of ads on the Apple home page? Or how about that stupid little movie on the 300 blurb on the Movie Trailers page?

To stop these things from playing automatically, control-click on the offending movies (or any other QuickTime content), and select Plug-in Settings from the pop-up menu. Go to the Browser tab on the QuickTime preferences panel, and uncheck the 'Play movies automatically' option. You'll now have to click to play any embedded QuickTime content.

[robg adds: You can go directly to the QuickTime Preferences panel, of course; no need to first visit a web page with QuickTime content. And yes, this is a somewhat obvious hint, but it's possible that not everyone knows where to look to disable auto playback.]

doesn't always work

When I go to http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads, the QuickTime ad that comes up starts playing automatically. I was surprised by this, since I've had the setting turned off in System Preferences for ages. (The layout of that page is poor too, by the way -- it has too much white space at the top.)

It's not too obvious; I appreciate the hint!

I have also had this problem for a long time. It seems like about 40% of the time (a complete guess), movies in my browser start playing automatically, even though I have it set not to in the preferences. It's driven me nuts for a long time, so it's at least nice to know that someone else is having the same problem. I wish Apple would fix this so that it worked all the time...

My guess... Prevent automatic playback of embedded QuickTime

My guess is that QT settings option only works for movies that were not encoded with the option "autoplay" on... (on whatever software)

So if a movie was encoded with that option on, the movie settings will then overrule the QT system settings...
