Have fun with Google's 3D Warehouse Internet
Google has a free 3D modeler, Google SketchUp, but for the moment it is Windows only (the Mac version has been announced but is not yet available). However, although Google doesn't mention it, OS X users can get a free viewer to view and manipulate existing models directly from the sketchup.com site.

People have made many nifty 3D objects that Google is hosting in their 3D warehouse. With the viewer installed, you can download and examine any of these models.

It asks for admin password to install... duh.
You can run it by opening installer app package - there is sketchup.app hidden inside.

Ooooh, hadn't noticed that you can also download these to Google Earth.

Nice.

As far as I have seen you can't actually "manipulate" the models other than to move/zoom around and set the shadow.

Still nice though.

Well it might not be the Google SketchUp, but you can download a trial version of the excellent SketchUp for Mac at the SketchUp Site: http://www.sketchup.com/?id=76

It looks like Google did buy or at least license a version of Sketchup. It's great and a wonderful choice for them. I've recommended it for years to people and now finally might get the College I teach in to buy it. The Mac version is great, people should download the trial, I bet the objects they create are Google Workshop compatible.

The company SketchUp is now fully owned by Google. They were bought out in just the last month or so. The free version of SketchUp is a stripped down version of the commercial version. The commercial version (which is really great) will set you back about $500.
