Move keywords from Extensis Portfolio to iPhoto 6 Apps
In my opinion, version 6 of iPhoto is the first that fulfills almost all my needs. Previously, I used Portfolio (from Extensis) to index my pictures with keywords. I did not want to redo all the indexation, and therefore wrote some scripts to pass these keywords onto iPhoto.

First, I needed to dump the information from Portfolio. I own version 6, and it has a bug that does not allow me to use "export to text" under Mac OS X. I had to rebbot my TiBook under OS 9 to do the export...

Then, I wrote a perl script that updates the AlbumData.xml file in the iPhoto library, only to discover that this file is never read by iPhoto. So I changed my perl script to make it output some AppleScript that adds the keywords to the pictures.

I did not want to browse through pages of documentation, so I found the syntax to add keywords to a pictures, and to change comments, by trial and error.

I did not figure how to add new keywords through AppleScript. So, before using my script, you need to use iPhoto to add all the keywords that you want to appear. Other keywords will be in comments.

One tricky thing is that some pictures in my library have identical names, and I had to detect which one corresponded to the one referred to in Portfolio. Full paths to the pictures were different in many instances, which may not be the case for your picture library. Therefore, parts of my script might be useless.

I suggest that you back up your photo library before doing anything with my script. The only garantee I offer is that it worked for me, and that I'd like to share my experience. I don't think that someone that does not understand the techniques I use should use my script.

Download the script file here.

[kirkmc adds: The usual caveats apply: untested, and if you have any doubts, be careful. Back up your photos.]
