I tried this earlier hint on using PowerPC printer drivers on Mac OS X Intel. I noticed when printing from Intel or Universal applications that if I selected the print driver options which were provided by the PowerPC code in the printer driver, the printing application would crash.
I attempted my printing with Firefox, and for the purposes of discovering a way to get access to those printer features that crashed it, I set Firefox to open with Rosetta. Once I did so, the options worked properly without crashing Firefox. Of course, starting Firefox with Rosetta made it much slower.
Preview, on the other hand, doesn't seem to run slower than my tolerance in Rosetta mode. So what I now do is print from my applications to a PDF file, open the PDF with Preview in Rosetta, and set my print options from there. I'm sure someone could make a nice little AppleScript to automate turning on Rosetta, opening Preview and then turning it back off, but I've not examined that yet.
At least for me, this workaround lets me setup the advanced printing options when I need them, which is only around 10% of the time. So if you're stuck with a PowerPC-only printer driver like me (I have a Samsung ML-1450), this may be a suitable workaround.
[robg adds: Instead of an AppleScript, another option is to simply duplicate the Preview application, and set the duplicate to open in Rosetta. I've tested this, and it seems to work as expected, though I'm not sure what might happen if you had them both running at once, and then changed the prefs in one, for instance. But for typical use, it seems like the simplest solution -- just drag and drop the PDF onto the Rosetta version of Preview. Keep it in the Dock, Toolbar, Sidebar, etc. for fast access.]
