The SMC2621W-U print server is a small, cheap wireless print server with support for Windows and AppleTalk printing. At least that's what it says, but I have never gotten it to work correctly with OS X using these protocols. To use it with OS X (I'm currently on 10.4.6), follow these steps:
- Make sure that your Wireless Lan is set up correctly. Also make sure that you can reach your SMC print server using your web browser.
- You need to know the IP address of your print server. The print server has the option to obtain a dynamic address through DHCP. For the following to work, it needs a fixed address however. So you either have to configure the DHCP server to always give the print server the same address, or you must configure the print server to use a static address.
- Once you have set up the IP address of the print server, go to System Preferences on your computer and select Print & Fax.
- Click on the small "+" button below the list of installed printers. At the top of the window that pops up there is a button "IP Printers". Click that.
- Select 'Line Printer Daemon - LPD' from the protocol drop down list.
- Enter the IP of your print server into the Address text field.
- Enter L1 as the queue name.
- Enter the name and location of the printer. You can choose whatever you want (e.g. Laserjet 1200 and Conference room).
- Select the printer manufacturer and model.
- Now click 'Add.'
That's it. At least it worked for me. Anyways, good luck with this -- took me some time to get this device to work with OS X.
