10.4: Watch and listen to the Tiger setup movie System 10.4
Tiger only hintI was asked by a friend to help him make the setup tune that is played when you first install Tiger as his phone's ringtone. After a lot of digging I found the location of the sound file (an MP3), and the movie (a QuickTime movie). I couldn't find this documented anywhere, so thought I would share it here.

From the Finder select Go -> Go to Folder (or hit Shift-Command-G), and then paste the following:

/System/Library/CoreServices/Setup Assistant.app/Contents/Resources/TransitionSection.bundle/Contents/Resources/

(That's one long line, and should copy properly, even if your browser shows it on two lines). The two files are intro-sound.mp3 and intro.mov. Have fun.

[robg adds: Amazingly, we've never documented these files' location before, though we discussed the original version of the music in a much older hint. You can combine the two files into a new movie with sound using QuickTime Pro (or iMovie HD, I imagine).]

Anyone know why intro-sound.mp3 is 1:24 seconds and the intro.mov is only 30 seconds? I havn't installed in a while, does the video stop at the ending X screen for a while?

Hi,
The movie is shorter than the sound file for a very valid reason. When you install Tiger your greeted with the movie, then when it stops the music continues to play as you create an account and register etc. If the movie and sound file were combined then once the movie finished the sound would too.

I'm the guy who sent the tip in BTW.

Dave

No, just de music goes on while you can setup Tiger 's network and things. I think this was the explanation.

For those that want the full song (with lyrics), the tune is Bytecry by the band Weevil (iTMS link).

And the others:
10.3 (Panther) was Eple by Röyskopp (iTMS link)
10.2 (Jaguar), and 10.1 (Puma) was Sofa Rockers (Richard Dorfmeister Remix) by Sofa Surfers (iTMS link)

I was able to import the track into iTunes (File menu >> Import dialog), but not without first dragging a copy of the sound file out of the path location ... the Import dialog wouldn't let me beyond the "CoreServices" folder. With a copy on my home folder though, Importing to iTunes was a snap.

Imported the QuickTime movie file into iTunes, as well.

I love this website!

If you just doubleclick the mp3, iTunes will open, import the file and play it.

Not sure if this is a bug or a feature; a user might want to hear a song but not import it. Of course, you can do that with the Finder Preview.

What's more, is you can watch the intro.mov in ASCII text. Download the ASCIIMoviePlayer from Apple here. Then, in Terminal, type to the path to the ASCIIMoviePlayer followed by a space and the path to the intro.mov file:
/path/to/ASCIIMoviePlayer /path/to/intro.mov
*NOTE: for most .mov files, you will need to make your terminal window very large, sometimes even beyond the screen borders, or else the ASCII will wrap and screw up the movie.

The music in Apple's Tiger setup movie is sampled from Röyksopp's "Eple" (Original Edit) Melody A.M.. I'm guessing "Eple" is phonetic for Apple.

There is also an EP of the track. Both the EP and the album are available from the iTMS. Here is the link to the EP.

That was the music from 10.3 i believe.

i dont recognize the 10.4 music, but i know it's not Eple from Royksopp. (though it's possible that it's another Royksopp tune i haven't heard...)

I believe you mean 10.3 was Eple by Röyksopp.

You know, there is a world outside the US where everyone don't speak English. Ooh and English isn't a universal meta-language either.

It is very simple, »eple» is Norwegian for the fruit the french call »pomme» and the germans »Apfel».

Great hint! Thanks

But this leads me on to one of OS X's long time annoyances - why does every 'show package contents' window open in icon view, the least user-friendly view there is when you are drilling down into the nitty gritty of an app?

Maybe in 10.4.6...?

/not holding breath/

For 10.3, it should be this file:
"/System/Library/CoreServices/Setup Assistant.app/Contents/Resources/intro-sound.aiff"
