Play Chess from Terminal.app UNIX
I couldn't find anything on macosxhints.com, so I thought I would post this. In Terminal, navigate into the Chess.app package:
$ cd /Applications/Chess.app/Contents/Resources/
You'll find that Chess.app is based on the free chess program Sjeng (version 11.2). So you can play it in the Terminal, if you wish. Just type ./sjeng (link to it for easier access), and have fun!

Does anybody know how to make it play against gnuchess (via xboard)? It would be cool to see the winner!!

First install xboard, gnuchess and crafty using fink. Don't use darwinports because the interaction between gnuchess and xboard have been broken for some time. Then in X11 mouse over to Applications - Customize Menu. Click the ADD button and enter this string in the second field:
 xboard -size medium -fcp gnuchess -scp /Applications/Chess.app/Contents/Resources/sjeng
Note: -size just determines the size of the chess window and can be ommitted. Let the games begin!

If anyone wants a demonstration of the cool things you can do with Unix, this is a great one! Thanks.

I believe old versions of Chess.app used gnuchess, so if you still have Jaguar or Panther around, that might be one way.

How would one go about getting gnuchess off the install CD's? I've looked but have not actually found the package. I don't want to re-install the earlier OS (I'm running Tiger) just to get gnuchess.
