10.4: Sync Nokia Series 40 via 10.4.6 iSync System
Tiger only hintAt last, iSync has support for the Nokia Series 40 operating system (OS), but not all phones have been added. This is, though, quite easy to do yourself. (This is based on another hint posted about the Series 60 phones.)

First of all, check what edition of series 40 OS you have. I have a Nokia 7370, and it has the 3rd edition. You'll need this info to update the plug-in file...
  1. Go to /Applications -> iSync.app -> Contents -> PlugIns -> ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice -> Contents -> PlugIns -> PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin -> Contents -> Resources. (From Finder, use Shift-Command-G, for Go to Folder.)
  2. Open upp MetaClasses.plist in your favorite text editor.
  3. Search for series40 and find a phone with the same edition as yours. Mine was 6280, and had this string -- family.com.nokia.series40.3rdEd.bus.bt. Note the 3rdEd, which matches my phone's OS.
  4. Copy the phone's entry (everything from <key>com.nokia.6280</key> to the </dict> end tag) and paste it just before the next phone's <key> tag.
  5. Change all model entries to your phone's model number. In my case, that was all 6280 to 7370.
  6. Be sure to copy the phone's tiff file also. NOK6280.tiff to NOK7370.tiff. You can change this image later if you want to.
Remove any parings, and re-do with your phone, and Voila! You should be able to sync with iSync. Good luck!

As always, make a copy of your MetaClasses.plist before fiddling so you can go back if things go south. I have made similar edits so that my Alltel RAZR V3c will sync with iCal.

You can find it here ->

This trick still only works with Series40 1stEd or Series40 3rdEd phones. Phones such as the Nokia 6255i still do not work.

Nokia 6255i and 6265i are CDMA (probably on Verizon or Sprint network) phones.
Most Nokia CDMA phones do NOT have SyncML, which is required for iSync.

Hi Folks,

I have a Sprint PCS Nokia 6016i, which I presume is a Series 40 phone since its relatives the 6015/6015i/6016 are, but I have been unable to get it to work wih iSync 2.2 using this hint. After following the hint the phone is not even recognized. Is this a futile effort on my part? Is this phone not iSync-able?

Finally! I just synced my 6230 for the first time! It actually did it! Was there an official release stating this that I missed? I suppose I'll head over to the iSync page to see if there's any mention of it.

Anyone know if the newly released (well, new to TMobile) Nokia 6103 is a 1st or 3rd generation Series 40? I'd love to tweak my MetaClasses file and get this phone to sync... Thanks!

The plugin is rendered obsolete by the 10.4.9 update. Apple now supports more devices.

This worked for my new 6233 (see http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/6233)

I copied the '<key>com.nokia.6280</key>' section and replaced all 6280 with 6233.

iSync worked, but it did show a warning that not all my contacts were synched due to a lack of phone memory. I guess I need to make a new group of contacts that I want on the phone to get around this.

This also works for Nokia 6125 and MacBook (10.4.7). I did it by modifying the entry for Nokia 6111. Thanks, Henkez. Is there any way to sync a Nokia 6100 over USB?

I tried this plugin with 10.4.8 G4 Powerbook 1.67 Ghz and my new Nokia 6102i.

It works perfectly. I can sync Contacts and Calendar.
And I can browse the device and transfer files back and forth.

Thank You Kind Sir for rolling up that plugin!

Cheers, Denny

Creating your own iSync Phone Plug-in for OS X 10.4.9 iSync 2.4
Authored by: Accolade on Apr 12, '07 02:30:11AM

As some other posts have mentioned elsewhere on the site, the latest OS X/iSync updates break the functioning of this hint with some phone models (in my case the Nokia 6233). Some sites offering updated plug-ins are either unreachable or require you to buy a product.

I managed to hack the new iSync preferences for the Nokia 6233 as follows (don't know if this will work for other phones):

  1. As above go to /Applications -> iSync.app -> Contents -> PlugIns -> ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice -> Contents -> PlugIns (This is where the above hint breaks down now...apparently there is no longer a PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin)
  2. Select the phone plug-in folder of the phone model that most closely matches yours (I used Nokia-6103.phoneplugin because the 6103 is a Series40 phone like the 6233) and make a copy of it.
  3. Rename the copied folder to match the name of your phone (in my case: Nokia-6233.phoneplugin)
  4. Open your new folder. Open the Contents folder.
  5. Now you should see: Resources folder, info.plist, version.plist
  6. Open info.plist in a text editor and search and replace all instances of the phone model number (in my case: 6103) with your own phone model number (in my case: 6233). Don't worry about making changes to these files...after all, you just copied the whole folder!
  7. Open the Resources folder. Now do the same string search and replace for the phone model number in the MetaClasses.plist file.
  8. If you want, replace the .tiff file of the old phone with a 60x60 pixel tiff file of the Nokia 6233 (I was able to find an 80x80 file on the net and resize it). For best results, make sure the .tiff background is transparent. Remember to rename the .tiff file by changing the phone model name/number to match the new name/number!

That's it! You're done. Now remember to backup all your address book, ical data (and the contacts, calendar data on your phone as well) before going any further. Then open up iSync, get rid of any old pairings, and then pair new device. It should work from there! If you changed the .tiff file, you might need to restart iSync after creating your new pairing for the image to update.

Hope this helps!

Creating your own iSync Phone Plug-in for OS X 10.4.9 iSync 2.4
Authored by: Accolade on Apr 12, '07 02:38:59AM

I must be going blind in my old age. X-}

I'd followed the above hint last year when I got my 6233 and it worked. The recent updates did, however, break the hack. There is still a PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin folder and for some reason I completely missed it while I was making my changes this morning!

Still, the solution I outlined above is working well for me so, if anyone is having trouble getting their phone working with iSync, it's worth a try. :-D

Works with Nokia 5310 XpressMusic !
Authored by: tsaaps on Nov 20, '07 12:45:12PM
I was able to adapt this to my new Nokia 5310 XpressMusic phone!

I used the updated instructions above ("Creating your own iSync Phone Plug-in for OS X 10.4.9 iSync 2.4" http://www.macosxhints.com/comment.php?mode=view&cid=86309 ), except for the following little change:

In the MetaClasses.plist file described in the mentioned comment, add the string "XpressMusic" to the line
<string>Nokia+Nokia 5310</string>
. After adding the string, this line becomes
<string>Nokia+Nokia 5310 XpressMusic</string>
This seems to be needed or iSync will not recognise the 5310.

Ahh annd the best: Even Address Book images get synchronised as with S60 phones!

The only thing I'm still missing but haven't seem on any phone (except probably the iPhone) yet is a syncing of address groups to my nokia phone.
I wonder if there is a public API that could help in implementing this.

Cheers,
Simon

10.4: Sync Nokia Series 40 via 10.4.6 iSync
Authored by: cdseaman on Jun 04, '08 07:06:54AM

Hi - I am using OSX 10.4.11 and iSync 2.4. I have tried the above installer for the 5310 XpressMusic but to no avail - from what I've seen elsewhere this installer was for iSync 3.0 (does that make a difference?) I'd hack this myself but it's for work and we don't have admin rights to the plugins directory. So something that works is critical so I don't bother IT repeatedly.s

Conrad Seaman
