Speed up Adobe Reader PDF rendering in Safari Web Browsers
Launch Adobe Reader, and then open its Preferences. Under the Internet section, update your network speed to LAN (or whatever's appropriate) from 56kbps (default).

This really speeds up the Adobe Reader PDF viewer plug-in from within Safari.

[robg adds: In my testing, I didn't notice a huge speed increase, but setting the preferences to your proper connection speed seems like a generally good thing to do.]

I find the built-in PDF rendering capability much faster than the Adobe one... the latter for me also seems to hang the browser on a regular basis.

I think the better question should be, Why would Acrobat care what kind of connection speed you in the first place? Should this already be established through the Network interface when a connection is established?

Oddly enough, at least in Acrobat Professional, there is a button in the same preference panel to open the System Preferences Network prefpane. Evidently they are at least aware of it. But you still have to set the network speed.

I'm guessing that it has to do with "speculative downloading in the background", as it says on the option on the same preference page. When you are viewing an appropriately structured PDF one page at a time, the reader can be downloading further pages while you are reading. I'm guessing that its algorithm for deciding how aggressively to download ahead of your reading might depend on your connection speed and so telling it the correct speed might be advantageous in some cases.

Adobe Reader

it'd be one of those things you'd be installing on your own. in general... third party apps don't magically appear on machines.

personally i like the PDF Browser plugin over both Adobe Reader and the built-in stuff. however... Adobe Reader will bust it when it installs its plugin in the Internet Plug-ins folder. kind of annoying.

I can confirm a noticable speed-up on my machine (PB G4 1.33 GHz, Acrobat Professional 7.0.7). Thanks for that hint.
