Update Garmin nuvi GPS firmware on a Mac System
Seeing the TomTom post, I thought I'd chime in that while everyone waits (and waits) for Garmin to make good on its Mac compatibility promise, the new nüvi 350 (a great in-car GPS) is already fully Mac compatible, only it seems Garmin doesn't even know it!

Last night, I updated my nüvi's firmware to 3.2 using nothing but my G4 iMac, 10.3.9, and a USB cable. It's almost too easy to call a "hint." Download the updater from Garmin. It's a .exe self-extracting archive (boo, hiss). Drop it on Stuffit Expander. Mount an SD card, either in your nüvi attached via USB, or in a card reader.

Drag the Garmin folder from the expanded archive to the card. Put the card in the nüvi and boot 'er up. Let the nüvi do its full update process. That's it.

If you're updating from a version of 2.9 or older, be sure to back up your waypoints file first, found in the main nüvi directory. Again, it's drag and drop. No Windows needed.

Do note that this model is only sold in Europe with no US map support.

I think it's not quite fully compatible yet. I mounted my Nuvi (v3.20) on my PB (10.4.6) and I am having trouble unmounting it. I would eject the drive from my desktop but the drive would return in a matter of 5 seconds or so. The only way to truely get rid of it is to reboot my OS X or unplug it during the time the drive disappears from the desktop.

I suspect there's still some bugs in the driver/firmware department. Close, but not perfect.

You can force unmount your nuvi by usiong the command line.
Whatever drive name it shows up as, open the terminal and type umount /Volumes/DriveName

that will unmount.
no reboot, no worry unplugging cables.

I tried this protocol on my iMAC with OSX10.3and was able to get the garmin files onto an SD disc but my garmin doesn't seem to know its there. You use the phrase for the nuvi "boot 'er up" which I assume means start it. But how do you get the nuvi to update using the SD disc files?
Is there a file to run in the nuvi? Thanks for any help. I love my nuvi, but the inability to upgrade is frustrating, and Garmin seems to be having trouble getting their MAC programming up and running.
Thanks.

Had the same trouble with the process for updating my Nuvi 350. Downloaded the v4.4 update and expanded it so ended up with a <nuvi350_430.exe Folder> on my Mac.

Connected the Nuvi 350 via USB, dragged the <nuvi350_430.exe Folder> to the Nuvi 350 and it copied it. Ejected the Nuvi and restarted it. Did not see any update performed. Checked the software version (v3.8) and it has not been updated.

Once the folder is on the Nuvi 350 -- what's next?

This is outstanding. It worked perfectly on my c550. Shame on Garmin for (1) taking so long with their mac software and (2) not announcing this very simple workaround for those who can use it.
