10.4: Combine Mail messages for print via Automator Apps
Tiger only hintI created a three-line Automator application to combine multiple messages into a single (new) email message. I can then print this message, which saves tons of paper.

First, you select the messages you want in Mail. They will be put into a new message in the order you see in your Mail window (top to bottom), so sort the messages accordingly first. Then double-click the Automator application, and voila, you will have a new Mail message. Sweet.

The Automator app is made up of these three steps:
  1. Mail: Get Selected Mail Items
  2. Mail: Combine Mail Messages
  3. Mail: New Mail Message
Just Save it as an Application when you're done, and that's that. You could also pass the combined message to a text editor instead of creating a new message, if you wish.

[robg adds: This works, and Automator/Mail automatically includes a row of divider text between each message. You could also use Butler or QuicKeys or similar to assign your application to a hotkey, so you could run it directly from Mail...]

How do you get the mail messages into the workflow? When I tried to drag and drop messages into the workflow, they wouldn't drop in. Do you have to save the workflow as an application first in order for it work?

Oh, I figured it out. I didn't see the plus button for the first action.

Great workflow. Nice and simple.

Thanks! That'll be handy in my work.

I noticed that we can also save this Automator action as a plug-in, to the Scripts Menu. That just saves it in the top level of your User/Library/Scripts folder. I moved it into a subfolder. Automator has no probs reopening it and letting me edit it even though I moved it. Nice.

I also inserted an action: Ask for Confirmation. That's so it can remind me how to use it!

For "Message", I typed: Before you combine Mail messages.

For "Explanation", I put: First, you select the messages you want in Mail. They will be put into a new message in the order you see in your Mail window (top to bottom), so sort the messages accordingly first. Then double-click the Automator application, and voila, you will have a new Mail message. Press OK if you're ready, or Cancel if you want to go back and sort your messages first.

When I run it, the dialog box pops up, reminds me how the thing works, and lets me decide to continue, or to go back and sort. Works great!

Lovely! I modified it to put the combined text into a TextEdit document instead, without saving, so I can change the fonts, etc. before I print.

or Save as...

You can also just select the emails you want, go to "File" - "Save as...".

You then have the option of RTF, plain text, or raw source - and you can then print it etc.
