10.4: Create a Universal NetBoot OS X OS X Server
Tiger only hintAs posted here earlier, it is possible to create a "Universal OS X" installation disk.

But what's even better is one can create an Universal NetBoot Image, too! Simply image the partition, open the .plist file in the image folder, and add the entry ppc to architectures. Now you can activate the image, and even select the supported platform - PowerPC, Intel or both: Universal.

I tested this with an iMac G5 17" and an Intel iMac 17" (the Intel iMac is much faster).

[robg adds: I wish I had more detail to add on this (such as the exact name of "the .plist file"), but I can't test it myself, and the author left no contact info.]

I'm guessing the author means NBImageInfo.plist, but I'm not sure. I haven't created a new NetInstall set since the Universal binary packages were issued so I don't have a PPC reference in there yet.

It's not my post, but the file would be the NBImageInfo.plist in the NetBoot image folder. Obviously the name of folder will be different depending on the image, but those who have created NetBoot images know this. It would be something like:

/Library/NetBoot/NetBootSP0/Image_410109091550.nbi/NBImageInfo.plist.

The "Image_410109091550.nbi" part would be different depending on the image you are updating. The first four numbers are the image index and the last numbers are the timestamp of when it was created.

The poster of this hint indicates that they tried this, but I do not believe that this will work. The original hint makes this work by creating a partition for each architecture. Netboot images can only have one partition.

By overlaying Mac OS X for Intel on top of a PowerPC installation, the other hinter created a single partition that would boot both. Read it before you comment further.

Dual.nbi/
NBImageInfo.plist = (
Architectures = { "i386", "ppc" };
BootFile = "booter";
[...]
)
ppc/
booter
mach.macosx
mach.macosx.mkext
i386/
booter
mach.macosx
mach.macosx.mkext
System.dmg

thats how it works. you need to create booters for each. the mach.macosx
mach.macosx.mkext are the same. the System.dmg is the same.

enjoy
