Run Starcraft on newer versions of OS X Apps
Starcraft has problems running on newer installs of OS X, due to case-sensitive HFS. The easy fix for this is to create a read-write image that has a case-insensitive file system and installing it in there.

[robg adds: As submitted, the hint read "due to a case-sensitive HFS" and "has a case-sensitive file system." I changed the second occurence to insensitive, as I think that's the only thing that makes sense. If I'm wrong and it's vice-versa, someone please correct me.]

Run Starcraft on newer versions of OS X
Authored by: r.leroux on Mar 21, '06 08:45:10AM

Hi Rob,

I installed StarCraft (original) using the Mac OS X 2.0 Installer then added the 1.13f patch. I am running on G3 B&W 350 MHz with 10.4.5. No problem.

Regards,

Ronald

I've had no problems running the Starcraft Brood War expansion. I've had to update a couple times via Battlenet, but it all works fine here.

PB 17-inch
1.67GHz
1.5GB RAM
Tiger 10.4.5, Build 8H5
Starcraft 1.13f

Same here: Starcraft works like a charm, provided the latest updates are installed. Methinks this is a non-hint.

Your drive probably isn't set to case-sensitive.

To set the record straight, Rob got the correction right.

I've never used Starcraft, but I had the same problem with Norton Antivirus*. You can format a hard drive "HFS+ Case-Sensitive" in Tiger. You need to explicitly do this and, unlike journalling, it erases the volume, so if you haven't reformatted your drive intentionally like this, you are still normal HFS case-insensitive, case-preserving, and Starcraft and NAV won't have any trouble.

So that's why he had trouble and you guys don't.

* I only use NAV because I get the sofware and updates free from the University of Wisconsin - Madison whilst I'm a student. After, probably ClamXAV.

Isn't case-insensitive HFS+ still the default on any new install? I seem to remember that OS X didn't like case sensitive filesystems and that it wasn't recommended for general use - merely as an available option for special cases.

A more accurate description for this hint would be "Run Starcraft on case-sensitive partitions." Actually, not just Starcraft, since there are other applications (older ones, especially) which have similar troubles.

What question bugs me, however, is: why would anyone with a case-sensiteve HFS partition need to run Starcraft?

Unix hackers like to play Starcraft too. :)

I can confirm that the case-insensitive HFS+ filesystem is still the default filesystem as of Mac OSX Tiger 10.4.3. However, as of Tiger the case-sensitive filesystem has been an option when installing the desktop version of the OS. (Server version was available in Panther.)

I can't speak definitively [Don't have Starcraft], but i'd guess that some of its supporting files have names that would be duplicates on a case-insensitive system.

Do new Macs come formatted as HFS+ case-sensitive? Anyone?

No, they do not. In order to have a case-sensitive HFS+ drive you need to format it as such.
