Remove a delay when loading Mail folders on launch Apps
I was annoyed at Apple's Mail application slow loading of my only five folders with some hundreds of messages in them on application start-up. It took ages until it recognized all the folders.

I do not know whether it depends on the size of the folders or not, but there was always a long delay on simply displaying them. Here's my solution to this problem:
  1. Create a new single folder
  2. Move all the custom folders into this folder
That's it!

[robg adds: I haven't experienced any slowdowns on mail folder display when launching Mail, and I have something on the order of 40 folders visible at launch. I posted this one in case this is a problem that I just haven't personally seen.]

I have close to 100, I don't have this problem.

Perhaps it's something else.

I noticed a slowdown when accessing the Inbox on my .mac mail account. I could trace it down to some interessting discrepancy between the message count displayed in Mail.app's viewer window (10 messages) and in the quota limits tab of the account's info window (1935 messages). When I use Apple's webmail interface, all 1935 messages are present. Synchronizing or rebuilding the account has no effect. Could someone confirm this, please?

I can confirm this, and I think it's because Mail waits before it shows your Inbox until it has received a reply from the .Mac IMAP server.

The slight pause is more likely because the mail program is fetching new mail from the server apon first open. Apparently while doing this it "Locks" out use of any menu or window. Almost seems like mail is not a multithreaded app. Huh. So dissabling auto check email (set it to manual) would most likely help things.

Also: I have the mail "Activity Viewer" always open, this is what helped me realize what was going on concerning small startup pauses. :)
