Avoid a kernel panic with the D-Link DWL122 adapter Network
The D-link DWL 122 seems to very buggy drivers on OS X: when you unplug it while your Mac is on, it often crashes with a kernel panic. How can you avoid that?

Go to your System Preferences, then Network, then click Show and choose Network Port Configurations from the pop-up menu. There you can find "Ethernet adapter (en1)." That is your wifi dongle; uncheck the "On" checkbox, then click "Apply Now." Now you can unplug your dongle without any fear :)

Remember to tick it back to On if you want to use your dongle again. This hint is useful for other wifi dongles using the same chipset and drivers (e.g.: NetGear ma111).

A better way to avoid these kernel panics would be to stay the hell away from that dongle. I got stung by D-Link on this one too - it's a piece of crap and I can't see how they dare to put OSX compatible on the box.

I guess that's not too helpful a comment for people (like me) who already have that dongle. I don't use it much (on an ancient iMac up the attic) but it's definitely a solution for old machines.

My girlfriend bought the dongle more than an year ago for her Pismo and the drivers available from the official DLink site were hell to comply with (she found the solution exposed by this hint to unplug the dongle for example).
After a week or so she phoned the italian DLink support to expose her problems and ask for clarifications. They asked her if she wanted to be a betatester and sent her right away beta drivers that worked a lot better - still not perfect though. After a while she updated to a new Powerbook, so she gave away her dongle and I can't say about drivers nowadays.
If you have problems, try to contact your nearest DLink support center and express your dissatisfaction: apparently they were lacking betatesters. I guess airport is much more common among mac users.

This dongle is highly prized for its chipset because it allows you to crack WEP encryption.

Latest drivers

This is a great hint...agreed that they are crap under OS X, but support for passive scanning and packet injection is cool to have. Anyway, the latest drivers are referenced here:

You have to go to d-link's singapore site to get them, but they've worked fine for me with Tiger on my iBook (except that it can't sleep with the adapter plugged in, and trying to unplug the adapter without turning it off first (as described in the hint) panics the machine. The only solution left for me was to shut it down instead of sleeping.
