10.4: A Bluetooth file transfer fix for 10.4.5 System 10.4
Tiger only hintApple fixed most of the Bluetooth connectivity problems in the 10.4.5 update, leaving just one unresolved issue, wherein you can't send a file from the phone to the Mac. A workaround was posted on the Blue Mint blog.

Essentially you need to "kick-start" the Bluetooth transfer by switching tabs in Bluetooth's Preference Pane. Open Bluetooth's prefs, click Devices, start the transfer, then click the Sharing tab. It sounds silly, but the method works for me.

[robg adds: I added the 'super summarized' description of the method above, as it's my intent that the hints found on macosxhints should be able to stand alone if the source site ever goes away. There's more detail in the linked page, of course, where they also note that the original workaround came from this entry on rasterweb.]

Hmm. I have no trouble whatsoever to send files from my Sony Ericsson Z520 to my iMac G5 (iSight) running 10.4.4 (and vice versa).

I do have a problem connecting tot the mac via bluetooth to enable Bluetooth Remote Control, to kickstart Frontrow or to control iTunes from my couch

I could only make the connection by using the bluetooth setup assistant.

Or by switching tabs, as I read in this hint.

Still, not very elegant, I've seen it work better.

try the standalone combo updater
Authored by: 77ric on Feb 25, '06 09:22:22AM

I had no connection issues between my eMac and my Nokia 6680 until I upgraded to 10.4.5. After the upgrade I couldn't send files to my eMac from my 6680, and indeed the above hint does work to get connections started but lets face it it's not great. After spending a couple of hours thinking about it, and realising that it was 10.4.5 that broke my Bluetooth (at first i thought my DBT-120 had went the way of the dodo) i remembered a very early hint about using the standalone combo updaters to fix issues that were caused by the software updater.

So I went to the Apple site and downloaded the 10.4.5 combo update, and installed that. When the update is complete and the installer asked me too restart my Mac, I force quit the installer and ran a permissions repair, and then restarted.
once restarted I used the bluetooth firmware updater in the Utilities folder and ran that, when that completed I restarted my eMac and i have my bluetooth back.

If you look through the bill of materials for 10.4.5 PPC you will note that there are actually no changes at all to BlueTooth components. There were however changes in 10.4.4 just for the record.

I don't have any problem either with a SLVR and 10.4.5 on a MacBook Pro. It was "broken" originally because the file transfer setup folders were created by default when the admin ID was first setup. When I created a second non-admin account for regular use, the file transfer failed until I was reset to folders within my user id scope.

iSync

iSync used to work for me without a hitch. Now I seem to need to go through all of this *each* time I want to sync my calendar with my phone. I have to get the phone to send a file to the Mac then start synching. What a pain!

BTW I used the combo updater to get to 10.4.5 already.
