Fix a networked file issue in Creative Suite 2 Apps
I had a client run into an odd problem in Adobe Creative Suite 2 applications. She could browse to a specific file on a Samba share, but when she attempted to open or place the document, she would get an error complaining either about a locked file, or an unavailable filter.

It turns out the problem was that her local hard drive was named the same as her Samba share. The fix was to rename the local hard drive to a different name. I would assume that this applies to all types of volumes/media that have duplicate names.

There's one thing here that should be mentioned:

It's been strongly advised—time and time and time again by the Photoshop engineers—that users of Photoshop NOT work with files over a network. There are certainly users who have had success working across a network, but this workflow is not in any way supported by Adobe, because there are just way to many possible permutations of hardware/software/connections/permissions for the engineers to test and then to give their seal of approval upon. People who do have success with working across a network will post questions about how to fix their networked worrkflow when it suddenly and inexplicably takes a dump. I've been a regular participant on the Adobe Forums since 1997, and I have never once read that working across a network is recommeded or supported...at least not as written by anyone whose reputation for solid info is unimpeachable.

This recommendation has been elevated to the level of a mantra on the Adobe forums. If you want to experience what I'm talking about, go login to their Photoshop forum and ask a question about how to open, work with and save files across a network.

To (badly) coin a phrase: "caveat networkor"

Can someone explain me a typical Version Cue driven workflow. Isn't that supposed to be used over a local area network, sharing files and versions of those files between a number of users. I'd especially be interested if someone has done this in a mac+win mixed network.

My 2 cents.

Antti...

I'd strongly recommend that you'll get the most thorough answers to your questions by visiting the Adobe Forums section regarding VersionCue.

I don't use it so I can't help. Even if I could, my answer would be short, and I'd STILL point you toward the Adobe Forums.

Adobe Forums: Version Cue File Management Technology

Good luck!

Not a problem with the right file protocol

It doesn't reflect my experience: as soon as you are working with the Mac native file transfer protocol AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) in the actual revision (3.1 or 3.2 for Mac OS X 10.4.x) you will be able to save all files made by the Creative Suite server side.

Have a look at the free HELIOS File System Test to find out if your server volume will be respective of Mac OS X file system features.
