Fix a printing problem with the HP Color LaserJet 1500 System
Ever since I bought my HP Color LaserJet 1500, I have been disappointed and frustrated by its unwillingness to print some things. On some documents, I would hit the Print button, the print light on the printer would blink once, and then it would go back to its nap.

Today I figured out how to change that. I read a comment on a Linux newsgroup which stated that sometimes you had to manually change the paper size, because the printer wouldn't accept the default US size. This reminded me of a problem with the Classic version of Nisus Writer, in which you had to select Page Setup and change the Scale value to something other than 100%.

So I chose a scale of 99% on the document I was having trouble printing and voila, it worked!

Thank you for this fix. It saved the printer from the trash heap.

Can the scale be changed permanently or do I have to remember to rescale each time I print?

Thanks in advance,
David Pershing

Okay, I guess my solution was not that great afterall. Sometimes it helps, sometimes not.

There is a way that always works: Print from OS 9. The drivers that come for the Laserjet 1500 work perfectly under OS 9.

However, booting into OS 9 everytime you want to print is a pain in the but so instead, get Acrobat Reader 5, go to its "Get Info" screen and check the "Open in the Classic Environment" checkbox. (You need to use Acrobat Reader 5, because all versions after that are OS X only).

Now when you want to print something, instead "Save as PDF" and then drag the PDF onto this Reader 5 icon to open in in the classic environment. Then when you print, it will work.

I have had no end of problems with this printer on my various macintosh computers. Right now, with the new Airport Extreme (n protocol) the problems have all come back again. Basically, the printer just stops printing. Somehow my computers just lose it. At the moment, I have found that two things can bring the printer back. First adding the printer again can bring it back, or simply unplugging the usb cable and replugging it works. This only works if the printer is plugged into the usb bus of a computer. If I plug it into the usb bus of the new airport extreme, it seems not to work. In this case, once the printer stops printing, getting it back is a bit variable. There are so many possiblities, including rebooting the airport extreme base station, the computers, and the printer. This happened when we first bought this printer, then it eventually started to work with the printer plugged into an airport express. Now that does not work. It is just a matter of waiting until apple does some sort of upgrade somewhere in the chain, and something will make this printer work again. I is a real pain, and totally unpredictable.
