Save Music Store songs of interest for future purchase Apps
I love to browse through the iTunes Music store, even when I'm not necessarily looking to buy right away. This means I always find things I want to buy later. I can't believe Apple hasn't added a "Save for later" feature, but here's something I just stumbled onto:

Above the iTunes Music store window, and below the "Now Playing" window, is the iTunes Navigation bar. If you are looking at an album, it shows the path to where you're at: Home -> Genre -> Artist -> Album. You can drag-and-drop the album name from this bar onto your Desktop, and it turns into a weblink (just like dragging a URL from Safari).

Once created, if you double-click this weblink on your Desktop, it launches Safari and then bounces you to that album in the iTunes Music Store.

[robg adds: There are other ways of doing a 'save for later' in the store. You can select any given song (or use Command-A to select all visible songs) and drag it/them to an iTunes playlist. In the playlist, the songs will be listed complete with the Buy button (and you can hear the preview without opening the Music Store). Another option, which is the one I usually use, is to just add everything to the shopping cart, then review the cart later, before making the purchase decision. Make sure you have 'Buy using a Shopping Cart' enabled in iTunes' Store preferences.]

If you don't want to lost One-Click (and go the shopping cart route) or a desktop full of links, just drag the song file into your source window and name the newly created playlist "Songs to buy." Dump all the songs you want there, and have a 30 second preview that you can listen to at any time to boot.

Creating a playlist of iTMS selections like that has the side effect of generating console messages like this:

iPhoto[1728] playlist track 2783 contains bad track id

... when opening the iTunes media browser in iPhoto and other iApps.

What's particularly annoying is I started seeing those messages again sometime after removing my "wishlist" playlist and haven't figured out what I've added in iTunes since then that's causing them. Does anyone have ideas what might be causing this fussy miscommunication between iTunes and other iApps?

I have asked Apple since the first release of the music store for a better way to handle songs that I am interested in but not yet ready to purchase, such as a save as feature. Since I hate using the shopping cart I am stuck with using the playlist to do this. It would be nice if iTunes kept track of the tunes I have previewed or flagged so I could return later and purchase them.

...or a "bookmark this" feature would be interesting too...

If you go with the "drag to desktop" solution, you can do just the same with any album cover (or song for that matter). Dragi-it and it will become a Weblink...

A month or two ago I found an opensource app called Hallon. It is a temporary bookmark/URL manager that supports Safari, Firefox, iTunes, Finder, Address Book, iPhoto and Terminal. It's also extensible so support for other apps can be added.

http://hallon.sourceforge.net/

It's the nice price: free!

Now that I have my music library on a mac mini server I don't use the playlist feature of saving previews of songs I wish to purchase later. Also, I listen to Radio Paradise through the iTunes Radio and find music that way when I am at work. So now I use the 'Tell A Friend' feature in the iTunes Music Store to email myself a link to the album I am interested in. Then in the comments field of the email form I state the actual track I heard on the radio station. Finally, I have a rule setup in my mail application to keep all of the emails together.
