10.4: Control Front Row via speech Apps
Tiger only hintIf you have Front Row on your Mac, you might like this little idea. Pretend you lost your remote to control Front Row, and it's basically pointless to use the keyboard to control it. So why not say it?

The idea is to use OS X Speech Commands to control Front Row. First enable Speakable Items in the Speech panel of System Preferences. Then say Define a keyboard command and wait for your system to respond. You can now create a command that maps to Front Row. The trick is to set the speech listening method to 'Listen continuously with keyword.'

For example, I named my computer Eve. To activate Front Row, all I have to say is Eve Front Row. Saying the command again will deactivate it. I have also created Eve Move Right and Eve Move Left to cycle through the main menus, Eve Enter to select the menu, and so on.

What's the command to go back a level
Authored by: telltarget on Jan 31, '06 11:11:33AM

I tried setting up this method and it's a great work around for me since I installed a hacked version of FrontRow on my iMac and never had a remote.

My problem though is as far as I know the keyboard command to go back a level, from say Photos to the main menu is to push the ESC key. I couldn't set a keyboard command for the ESC key. I think because by default that key turns off speakable items.

Anyone have a fix for this?

somebody should build on this by using some kind of audio-emitting device to control front row - like a handheld ipod/speaker combo.

play a certain sound, and get a certain behavior from Front Row.

my email is blake At clockworm.com - whatever hardy soul accomplishes this, drop me a line. i'm too busy for the project right now.
